BaseX Server RestXQ total beginners example

Dear BaseX-Community, I try to access my BaseX-Database or Collection over the Web-Interface. This is what I´ve done so far: 1) Installed Jetty und started it. 2) Downloaded the BaseX76.war, extracted it to the folder BaseX76 and placed the folder in the Directory "<user>/jetty/webapps". 3) Now I started my Browser (Safari) and went to "http://localhost:8080" => Ok, the jetty-Startpage on my local web server is shown. 4) Now on the Browser, I navigate to "http://localhost:8080/BaseX76/" => OK, the Welcome-Page of baseX-Http-Services is shown. On this page, I click on the link "RestXQ and I get the Page "Welcome to the RestXQ-Service" which has the path "<user>/jetty/webapps/BaseX76/restxq/restxq.xqm". The examples HelloWorld and HelloUniverse give the right responses. 5) I modified the response of the POST-Handler (form) to find out, if this is the right place to do such things: (This is the modified content:) -------------- declare %restxq:path("form/") %restxq:POST %restxq:form-param("message","{$message}", "'no message delivered'") function page:hello-postman($message as xs:string) { let $ZaVar := 'Dies ist Dieter' let $ZaVar2 := ' und dies ist Anne' return <response> <title>Hello!</title> <info>It seems you posted a message: { $message }</info> <Za> Dies ist mein Text in Zrestxq und { $ZaVar } { $ZaVar2 } </Za> </response> ---------------- => my changes are given as response when I click on the Button of the "Welcome to the RestXQ-Service" page. So far, everything works. 6) My question is now: a) How do I access my local BaseX-Database (named "ZaTest", which I created and queried successfully by use of the BaseX-Gui? b) Are there examples or does anybody give me an advice, which settings in the jetty-preferences-files I do have to change, or what text I do have to put into the file "<user>/jetty/webapps/BaseX76/restxq/restxq.xqm". c) Where (which Filepath) do I have to place the Database-Folder "ZaTest", which I created with the Gui? d) If I have to connect or open or close the database - how is this done with the restxq-Interface (please example(s)). ------- Thanks in advance. I think, this is a real beginner´s example for people like me, which are very new to jetty and baseX, as well to restxq. I searched all documentation, but didn´t find, what I needed. BaseX start up questions

Hello all, I'm considering BaseX for a project of mine but before I go any further I have a few questions. First some facts: - I need to store up to perhaps 50.000 documents in each database (collection) at about 1MB in average size. - One database will be queried of up to 5 users at a time on average, each one issuing 50 times more reads than writes. I would say perhaps 50 rather simple reads (queries) a minute (most queries will be done against a single document at a time). - Ideally each server should host up to 50 such databases. Now to my questions: 1) Will the number of databases have a performance hit (degredation) on the system as a whole other than that caused be the extra number of concurrent users? 2) Can I expect a performance hit on a given database related to the number of concurrent users on that database, even if those users are mostly quering different documents? 3) Will the number of documents in a given database have a performance hit on queries done against that database? 4) Are there any limitations in BaseX that I should possibly be aware of? I would also like to know what my options are for backing up the databases (preferably while in use), and what I can do to repair a database if a document somehow become corrupted due to a software malfunction? Finally I would like to hear if BaseX is being used for other critical applications other than mine where stability and fast response times is essential? Thank you for your time, Regards Erik

Old EQName syntax

Hi, The wiki page at http://docs.basex.org/wiki/Java_Bindings contains the following example: Q{java:java.lang.Math}cos(xs:double(0)) which if I am right is the old syntax for EQNames, which should be now: "java:java.lang.Math":cos(xs:double(0)) Just in case. replace value vs. insert node

Hi, in terms of performance, is it cheaper to update the value of an existing node or to insert a node with that value? I'm not sure if I should create empty nodes or nodes with a default-value in the first place and when users specify values these nodes will be updated. Or if I insert nodes with these values when users specify them in the web interface. Values are short texts like "yes" or "no". The value of the one node I have to update in any case is a longer text with some markup in it (for highlighting purposes of single tokens). UPDINDEX for the DB is set and I will have to optimize the index after each user interaction, because I need the fulltext index in the next interaction. Dear Fabrice, thank you for your response! The crash happened during db creation (using db:create). Interesting idea to disable indexes - I will try this out. Out of Main Memory

Dear BaseX team, trying to create a database from a document with a size of 6.5 GB I get this error: "Out of Main Memory". Using the latest snapshot. Could this be expected? I suppose that data loading is done in a streaming fashion? Is there something I can do to upload a doc of that size? Thank you very much for hints, Hans-Juergen

Using BaseX in Java - doc?

Hi, I was looking on http://docs.basex.org/ after documentation on integrating BaseX within a Java application, but couldn't find any. Did I miss them? In a few words, I have a Java webapp running in Tomcat, and I'd like to use a BaseX database for the storage. Can I embed it completely? Do I have to start a server as a completely separate process? reverse proxy basex behind nginx

Hello List I have basex 7.7 beta running in http server mode with httplocal = false. Access and searches either with the client direct to the BaseX server, or via restxq called directly on the server are a few tens of milliseconds. I have the BaseX httpserver accessible to the external network through a nginx reverse proxy. traceroute shows that a call gets to the machine in about 120ms. However, access and searches of the Basex database from the network are in the order of tens of seconds. I would appreciate details of more successful proxying, and also any hints on the nginx - basex coupling. Many thanks Peter

store results of a query in a new database

Hi, I would like to store the results of an xquery extracting some nodes from an existing database into a new database. So I have the DB 'collect' open and then do: db:create('annotate-abcdef') and then for $i at $p in //entry[phraseme[text() = "abcdef"] and selected[text() = "yes"]] let $query := $i/query let $nodeid := $i/node let $node := db:open-id('TG-DTA-GerManC-stemming-ws', $nodeid) let $nodename := name($node) let $nodecontent := string($node) return insert node <div>{$nodeid} {$query} {element {$nodename} {$nodecontent}} </div> as last into db:open('annotate-abcdef') However, the error message is [XUDY0027] Insert target must not be empty. How would I add a root element to the new DB, as I don't wan't to link it to an existing document? All nodes added to the DB are only results from queries over an existing DB. All I can see from the Wiki is using a document as initial data for the DB. How do I set UPDINDEX ON for the new DB? I will later update the information added in the first place by other queries. To be able to use ft:mark, I would have to optimize the DB with db:optimize() after having added nodes, is this correct? Thanks in advance and best regards Cerstin -- Dr. phil.
