RESTXQ: function loading

Hi, i'd like to execute a function (which I wrote in an .xqm module) with an fn:function-lookup call. This function has no %rest:path annotation and seems to be unavailable from the current context function list (I inpected it with an inspect:context//function call). Is there a way to "force" its loading? I am currently working with the last BaseX8.2.2 war version. Thanks. Whitespace

Hi, When I use the file:write function, the whitespaces before an element are deleted (and also the initial whitespace of a string in an element). This is a problem for elements containing text and elements. Is there a way to avoid this? Thanks. J.

HTTP module and cookies

I am using BaseX to scrape data from a web site. This web site, probably like many other websites, relies on cookies and if it does not receive the expected cookies it delivers a page instructing you to enable cookies in your browser. I was able to get this working by parsing the http:header response to get the cookies to use in subsequent requests. This is the second time I've done this, and even though this works it seems a bit hacky. Is there a standard way of handling cookies using the HTTP Module or the Fetch module? Or, are there any well written code examples available? In other environments typically you define a cookie jar in some way, and the cookie jar is used (and is updated) automatically in all subsequent HTTP requests. I'm hoping to find something similar in BaseX. Thanks, Vincent

Reporting function for a subset

Hello, I want to call a reporting function with a subset of documents created inside a loop which will return a xml report. I couldn't find information how and if can it be done. The idea is that there is a main query which results in a subset. Then I want to make different processing only on this subset without making a query on the whole collection with the filters, as I've already done in the main query. The all-in-one query will actually return inside my own xml the results of the different functions. Is it possible? -- With kind regards, Menashè

Behaviour of doc() changed?

Hello, when using doc() we used to pass into it a relative (to the static base uri) filesystem path to an xml file. This was parsed without any problems. Now (basex 8.2.2) the parsing works but we get on the standard output stating that the database (named as the first path element) does not exist. I understand that the doc function first looks up the database server and then accesses the filesystem. Is it like that? Has this changed or is the exception just printed out whereas in previous versions it was not? Regards, Marco.

DBA - display the number of results from a query

Hello, I’m finding the web DBA functionality of BaseX more and more useful but one thing I really miss from the GUI is the display of the number of results in the top right corner. Many times when I’m running a quick query I want to know how many results there are and see at least an example of the results (as often the full set is too long to be displayed). I know I could add count() round the query and run it again but I’m lazy. :) So, I’m thinking it would be good to add the total results to the DBA Queries page I was about to start putting some code together when I realised I don’t know what would be the most efficient way to do this - so I’m turning to the list to see if a) other people think this would be useful, and b) what suggestions people have of the best way to do it. I’m thinking of returning the total count as an HTTP header so there’s no impact on any code currently using the result. What’s the best way of getting the count though? The naive solution is to run each query twice, once to get the count and once to get the results but that seems less than ideal. I think there’s something with caching of queries that may help. Is that how it’s done in the GUI? Any pointers gratefully received and of course I’ll share any code back to the project. Thanks, James

Parsing options on db:add (cdata-section-elements)

Hello, I am trying to retrieve some non-XML RDF data (as "text/turtle") from a SPARQL endpoint. I need to output the Turtle as a CDATA section inside a <script> tag in an XForms (X)HTML file, then add that file to a database. The file gets added correctly, but I'm not able to generate the CDATA section. Here is the function: db:add("xforms", document { $xslt-pi, $css, $form }, "turtle-test.xml", map {"cdata-section-elements": "script"}) When I run this, I get an error: [bxerr:BASX0002] Unknown database option 'cdata-section-elements'. I get the same error no matter which option I use (not just "cdata-section-elements"), so I guess I may be using the wrong syntax. Hope someone can point me in the right direction! Any Way to Create A Database And Commit To It From REST Service?

In my link management application I'm trying to refactor my code to move my link management metadata out of the content database (the one that otherwise has the user's XML docs) and into a separate database. The problem I'm running into is that because db:create() is put last on the pending updates list, you can't do return ( db:create('new-database'), db:add('new-database', '<some-data/>')) There doesn't seem to be a direct way through the RESTXQ-managed application to create the database since updating functions don't return anything (so I can't, for example, have the root page handler ensure that the database is there simply by calling an XQuery function to initial it). I think the only solutions are: 1. Have the database creation managed outside the REST application (e.g., in my git hooks, which are where the content database creation is done) 2. Use the redirect technique so that, for example, the root page is handled by an updating function that does the database initialization and then returns a redirect to the real root page handler. DBA login error

Hello, I'm a first-time BaseX user and have just downloaded version 8.2.2. When I start an HTTP server and attempt to log in to the DBA app with default admin credentials, I get an HTTP 500 error stating that there was a "Problem accessing /dba/login-check." However, if I go back and refresh the login page, I see that I have been logged in as admin and can access the DBA interface. Similarly, I get a 500 error when trying to access "/dba/logout." Is there something I have failed to configure? Organizing Large Numbers of Small Documetns?

In my link management application I'm creating a potentially large number of small documents that will serve as a where-used index over the content documents. Are there any potential issues with how these documents are organized into directories within database? The simplest thing would be to put them into one directory but I could also organize them into one directory per document used (which would then result in one directory per document that has links to it, which in a DITA context would normally be one directory for each document as every document save a few should have at least one link to it). So if I had a repository with a 100,000 topics, each with at least one link, is it a problem to have either 100,000 * x files in one directory or 100,000 directories under one parent directory? ft:mark

The full text function ft:mark() puts a mark around each of the words that occur in a match, starting from the first matching word to the last, including stop words, except for punctuation characters. Is it possible to check for the kind of characters (or strings) that ft:mark() will skip when marking matches? Or, would it be possible to ask ft:mark() to put one marker for the whole match? The case I am using it for is to get the sequence of matching words within a match, and sometimes, for long strings, there may be several sequences. A contiguous sequence of marked elements maybe assumed to make up a match, while non contiguous do not. One marker around the match solves the problem, as would detecting characters that are never marked. Regards Lars G Johnsen National Library of Norway

I think I wasn't thinking clearly about the problem. If I have a link from one page of the Web app to a REST URL, the results of that URL have to be shown so without using Javascript to submit the URL there will always be a separate result, which I can direct to a separate browser window. So it's not really an issue. And if I wanted things to be a bit more sophisticated I would use Javascript to submit the REST URL and manage the response, however long it took to return. Run Queries in Background from RESTXQ App?

I'm creating a RESTXQ-based Web application. One of things I need to do is have a REST method that then does a potentially long-running operation against the database. I don't see an obvious way to to start a long query and not have it block in the this configuration. If I had a standalone client app (e.g., a Java app that provided the UI) then it would be no problem, just create a new connection for the long-running app. But in the context of a RESTXQ application is there a way to do it? Execution problem

Hello, I am executing following query in basex 8.2 let $a := <a>if a > 0 {sum((1,2,3))}</a> return $a o/p : <a>if a > 0 6</a> but when I am executing let $a := <a>if a < 0 {sum((1,2,3))}</a> return $a it gives me a error "Expecting element name , '<' found. Query works for '>' but not with '<'. Thanks Samby

Mistake in the docs?

Hi Christian, maybe there's a mistake in the docs on the db:create function. * db:create("DB", file:list('.'), map { 'ftindex': true() }) adds all files of the current working directory to a new database and creates a full-text index. I think an empty sequence is required as third parameter to fill the gap for paths parameter. Isn't it? If you agree I can fix it. Regards, Marco.

Potential Bug - message from fulltext

When trying to to a full text index on a collection of texts, the process runs for a couple of hours with the exit message below - I think it is near completed. From the GUI, I have at least seen the progress bar get to around 80 %, so I think it is safe to assume that the error is connectedt the final stages. The texts are unstructured and represented as one line pr. book. Here is the result from the index process. Parameters set in GUI are: Norwegian Snowball, lemmatization, diacritics. There is set aside 30GB for the GUI. Path summary: doc(): 317259x, strings text: 317259x, leaf text(): 317259x, strings, leaf Here is the error message: Improper use? Potential bug? Having tried a few hours on this I submit it as a question : When I have any non-trivial amount of output it is always 'chopped', which might mean several things but at least it means that my results are just cut off at a random point. How do I get the full results so I can save them ? Thanks, Bob Berger

Hi Lars, I think a had a similar problem which appears to be related to the GUI. There are two thing you could do: 1) Increase VM memory 2) Start the server and try building the index using the client The second helped in my case (memory of server: 1GB). Hope this helps.
