Problem with Variable having Numericvalue node comparison

Hi, I am trying to compare two variable in basex as given, let $v3 :=<a>7900000.00</a> let $v2:=<a>930000.00</a> return $v2 <= $v3 I am expecting that it will give me true, But it is giving false. I think it is because of the comparison is only string comparison. Is it possible to configure basex for numeric comparison without changing the expression $V2 <= $V3 , or I have to explicitly convert variable value to decimal and then compare it. Thanks, Ankit

Increasing memory allocated to BaseX

I am running BaseX 8.1 on a Win7 machine with 8GB memory. I have a query that loads data from several CSV files, then generates a RDF/XML dump into a single, very large file (1370000 lines). When I run the query using the BaseX GUI, I get an "Out of Main Memory" error. I am able to get the query to complete via the command line, which is fine for the moment, but if the database gets larger, I'm anticipating that I won't be able to use it. An obvious solution would be to generate several smaller files, but the real problem is that BaseX doesn't seem to be utilizing all of the available memory. When I monitored memory utilization, it was only utilizing a small fraction of the available memory. I tried increasing the allocated memory by changing the BASEX_JVM=-Xmx512m to BASEX_JVM=-Xmx1024m line in the basex.bat and basexgui.bat files, but that didn't seem to have any effect - I still run out of memory and there is plenty of unused memory in the system. I must be missing something. Is there a simple change that I can make to make more memory available to BaseX? Basex Standalone : [bxerr:BXSQ0007] Could not initialize supplied driver: 'com.mysql.jdbc.Driver'

Hi, I am struggling to use Basex sql module together with Basex Standalone. I am getting the error : [bxerr:BXSQ0007] Could not initialize supplied driver: 'com.mysql.jdbc.Driver' The sql connection works finely while using the Basex server. I guess that it might be due to the fact that I don't know how to include multiple jar while using with eclipse. I tried to go to Windows/Preferences/XQUERY/Interpreters and set -classpath {BaseXDirectory}\lib\*, but it does not work. Maybe somebody already met this small issue before ? EXPath package format

Hi, It appears the EXPath package format has changed. The current version of the spec reads: the root of the ZIP file contains a directory named *content*, containing the components and any other file the package needs. http://expath.org/spec/pkg#descriptor A previous version http://expath.org/spec/pkg/20100107#d2e112 reads Alongside this descriptor, the root of the ZIP file contains a directory *named after the module name* (see below) which contains the components and any other file the package needs. BaseX appears only to support this earlier version. Hello ! I've had this problem : I've forgotten a db:optimize(...) after a delete nodes operation. The following xquery has been 60 times slower than before. Is there a way to detect an update operation, and a way to know on which database the update occurs, to run automatically a db:optimize(...) each time a update xquery is run ? Christophe

java.io.StreamClosed ignorable ?

Hello ! I have some java.io.IOException - Stream closed while performing updating XQueries. Thez are logged in basexgui java console, but in GUI, xquery is not interrupted, no error happens. Are these exceptions ignorables ? i.e. if process in GUI is not interrupted, is a fallback run and the log only informative ? Here is a partial stack-trace... Database opened by another process, for non-updating queries

Hi, I saw a case today where a Linux cron job was running non-updating queries while a GUI user on Windows 7 was running non-updating queries on the same database. The GUI operation succeeded, but the Linux cron job reported this error: Database 'DocLibrary' is currently opened by another process. Both processes were using BaseX 8.1. I think it would be difficult for me to provide a short, self-contained example that reproduces this phenomenon reliably. However, I wanted to report it as a data point, if that helps at all. If it is expected behavior due to the mix of platforms and operation modes, that would be useful for me to know. A very short question about BaseX

Hi, I’m testing BaseX and I have a very short question about XQuery Update Facility. If I try in other XQuery processor like Saxon a simple query that add a ‘id’ in XML, like this: xquery version "1.0"; declare default element namespace "http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"; let $sourcedoc := fn:doc("MOST.xhtml") return for $ancora at $gatto in $sourcedoc//*[@class="testo"] return if (not($ancora/@id)) then insert node attribute id {concat("testo",$gatto)} into $ancora else() Saxon run the Query and change the original file, “MOST.xhtml”. If I try the same query in XBase on Ubuntu, I see in the log XBase find the tag to add the id, but the original file is not changed. What I’m missing? Thank you Fabrizio

Performance issue related with Casting.

Hi, I am invoking a java method inside My XQuery script, My java methods returns a string array which contains the Id of elements. Now I am taking that list in a xquery variable. It looks like this. let $ids := javacontext:getIds(); // Java Method return /sample_xml/category/product[@id = $ids] Now the problem is that, It is working fine with this, but when I declare variable $ids as xs:string* sequence. It performance is decreased by almost 100%. It looks like this. let $ids as xs:string* := javacontext:getIds(); // Java Method return /sample_xml/category/product[@id = $ids] But, for bigger no of products, and ids . when the variable $ids declared as xs:string*, it is working good, but when I removed xs:string*. it performance decreased drammatically. I have no idea, why it is working in such a way. Any kind of help is appreciated. Thanks, Ankit

xquery of attributes

In the RESTXQ documentation there is this example which works fine : declare %rest:path("cities") %output:method("json") %output:json("format=jsonml") function page:cities() { element cities { db:open('factbook')//city/name } }; If I have the same factbook db but with name as attribute and not as element, with the only change in the code the xquery request db:open('factbook')//city/@name I will have the error message: [XQDY0025] Duplicate attribute 'name'. That's ok, but what is the right way in xquery to easily use multiple attributes as return value of request. Is the right way to prefer elements to attributes ? debugging

Hi, For those who, like myself, loose themselves often in their code, hereby a little debug-facility. Nothing much but it helps me keep track of my code. To get an idea of the debug-output, have a look at the attached output-file. Unfortunately the code isn't integrated in the BaseX-core, but it's just an xquery-module. So you, unfortunately, do have to write a few debug-calls in your, probably already buggy, code. On the other hand it's pretty straight forward; see attachment "debug_demo.xq" for usage. Running commands on BaseX on Tomcat

Hello! I have BaseX 8.11 running on Tomcat and need to execute some commands or XQuery for deploying xml files from elsewhere. I allready have a XQuery function for this and can do it on my local setup using for example the basexclient. My problem is that the Tomcat is available only through HTTP and I wouldn't like to open up the function for the outside world using RESTXQ. Is there a way to "talk" with the BaseX in the Tomcat? I have full access to the machine via SSH. Another way I thought of would be to just upload the data folder from my local setup, but it doesn't feel the right way to do it. Best regards Kristian K

I've used ColdFusion and (reluctantly) php with MySQL, so I have some idea about combining database query with html tags to get formatted output … but I'd welcome a pointer to a tutorial about doing the same thing with Base-X Also, what would you recommend as an introduction to xQuery? w3schools … I seem to remember this was a bit brief, and this afternoon I can't get it to load anyway; wikiBooks on xQuery already incudes exist-DB specific code in the second of its "Beginning examples". Dear Constantine, In my experience, commands are always faster than db:* calls. Maybe someone @basex could confirm that, and that commands do not use the Pending Update List ? Are you sure you disabled ADDRAW ? If there are many raw files along the xml files, you may have better results extracting and rearchiving only xml before. I have the same problem with patent archives, where each xml file may come with many pdf and gif. Querying a subset

Hello, I'm using Java org.xmldb.api package for accessing the Basex server (xmldb:basex://...) After getting the resultSet I need to make further queries about the requested subset (for reporting, etc.) I have seen that getId() cannot be used since the Resource will be anonymous if it is obtained as the result of a query. Source: http://xmldb-org.sourceforge.net/xapi/api/index.html The queries are not fixed and are based on end user selection. I couldn't find a way to have a direct access/reference to a document. In my case the ID is simply the filename, but it doesn't seem to be so efficient. I wonder if creating a temporal collection for the subset would be faster than making query/queries similar to the following example in which there are only two ids, but I can have thousands of them: let $ids := ('360836','300139') for $x in collection("collection_name") let $filename := substring-after(base-uri($x),'/') let $id := substring-before($filename,'.') where $id = $ids return ... -- With kind regards, Menashè

Poor runtime performance of node insertion in BaseX 8.1.1 (compared to BaseX 7.6)

Hi Christian, I have found that BaseX 8.1.1 has a very poor performance in comparison to BaseX 7.6 regarding inserting XML elements into an XML document. In my application I very often add new data to the DB by using a construct like this insert node local:recordsWithObjectType(‚Type') into /rootDoc local:recordsWithObjectType() is an xQuery function returning typically several thousand XML nodes which has to be inserted info a given root document. Running this kind of stuff on BaseX 7.6 I typically have a runtime of 500 ms when adding round about 3.000 nodes. Running the exact same stuff on BaseX 8.1.1 (same data) the runtime is about 5.000 ms (factor 10 more). Is there a way to boost the insert performance in BaseX 8.1.1 to a value comparable to BaseX 7.6? Thanks in advance, Werner

programming a statefull xquery-module

Hi Christian, To support debugging my code I'm writing a module with debugging-functions in xquery. To reduce the impact of the debug-functions on my code I want this debug-module to be statefull. So every time a debug-function is called it remembers it's previous debug state. This way I don't have to carry this debug state all throughout my already complex code. I've tried several options but without success. My latest attempt uses file-read and -write( see attached file), but I don't understand how these functions behave. Problem in STORE TO command

Hi I am using BaseX and I want to execute a query on a database and then save the result using the STORE TO command.The query is well executed but when i tried to save the results i had this error : RUN C:/xquery.xq ....... ...... ...... Connection refused

Hi I have created in BaseX 8.1 a huge database named 'dblp'(~1,5 Go) and I am trying to communicate with it from Java (Eclipse IDE). Hi Julia, the Xml files I'm using are also in different directories, one for each day. I create one database on each of these directories, each containing between several hundred and up to 6000 documents. Usually, queries need to take in account only one day, so the search space is considerably smaller than for one large database. If access to documents of more than one day is required, you can create the range of database identifiers (supposing there is an algorithm to do so) and then open each database in a for loop, thus getting a sequence of top nodes. Also, for more complicated queries, I can choose to (re)create some the databases in-memory in order to improve performance. Since creating a database of this size takes just a couple of seconds, this is an approach which would possibly not be feasible if all the documents were in one huge database. Kind regards, Goetz
