Easy to catch pattern?

Hi, For many reasons, we often encounter this pattern: 1) A process runs that tries to update the same .xml file twice within a single updating function. Or a writer may save a file or import a file from translation that is not well formed. Result: the .xml file is now saved as a raw file. 2) A second process (or the same process) tries to update that file again. Result: Improper user? Potential big? issue. Because we can't seem to catch the error on the 1st run (or maybe I'm trying the wrong way?), we might carry for a while without knowing that an issue occured. Then we get the second message, which is not very helpful because it doesn't help us catch the issue that caused the error. Would it be possible to improve the error handling on this issue, mostly to catch it on step 1? Here is a small test function to replicate the scenario. Hi all, I just want to ask shortly whether it is generally possible to run BaseX in embedded mode within a webapp on tomcat? Origami - simple templating module

Hi, I've just uploaded a small templating module to https://github.com/xokomola/origami Currently tested for BaseX 8.0 beta b863b4f but I will test with the latest snapshot later. With this module I wanted to see if there's a better way to do simple templating in pure XQuery taking advantage of the higher order functions that XQuery 3.0 offers. At the moment it only provides very simple selectors like "*" (match every element), "@*" matches every attribute and simple named elements and attributes. At the moment it's BaseX specific but should be adaptable to other databases that support XQuery 3.0. Happy to receive comments and improvements. stream binary responses from http:module

Hi I have built a small client in XQuery that fetches zip files from another remote service using the http-module and stores them on disk with the help of the file-module. Some of the returned zip files are really large and BaseX seems to need to materialize the files in memory before writing them to disk resulting in out of memory errors for some files. Is there some way read the response in a more streamable fashion when using the http-module? I tried using the fetch:binary function successfully but i really need the more extended functionality of the http-module. #results in out of memory if the zip file is too large file:write-binary("file.zip", http:sendrequest(...)[2]) #works all the time. file:write-binary("file.zip", fetch:binary(...)) Cross-platform deployment of BaseX

I used BaseX in a Windows-only project a couple of years ago (ver 6.5 or some such thing). I found it to be excellent for rapid text queries. I'm planning on re-writing the application but would like it to be cross-platform and ideally in native binaries. I've had some "anti-Java" feedback that makes me want to see if there is a way to package/compile BaseX so that the Java is all "self-contained" in an executable(s) with no other dependencies. I think of how I understand sqlite to work and wonder if BaseX can be packaged in the same way. I see in the documentation that Maven is mentioned but I'm not really sure if that is what I'm looking for since I'm not familiar with Maven. I'm at the edges of my understanding of how a Java-based program can be packaged so please be gentle with my inexperience and ignorance. I guess the bottom line is that I'd like someone to be able to install my application on Windows, Linux or Mac without having to think about if they have Java installed on their machine or what version it is or anything. I also don't want to force someone to install Java on their machine if they specifically don't want to. Is that possible with BaseX? Tomcat - Multiple BaseX Services - Startup Problems

Executing commands on Nov 6 snapshot

Hi, Is anyone experiencing difficulties in the Nov 6 snapshot with running commands like: basex -Vc “create database junk" where I get output like: Stopped at , 1/7: Syntax: CREATE [BACKUP|DATABASE|EVENT|INDEX|USER] [...] Create database, index, user, backup or event. Creates a new database, index, user, backup or event: - BACKUP [name]: creates a backup of the database [name] - DATABASE [name] ([input]): creates the database [name] with an optional [input] - EVENT [name]: creates the event - INDEX [TEXT|ATTRIBUTE|FULLTEXT]: creates the specified index - USER [name] ([password]): creates the specified user This has been tried on a couple of machine (Ubuntu, Mac OS X, CentOS) including clean installs. Dynamic Evaluation of XQUERY

Hello, I want to devise a generic xquery script, which accepts actual XPATH to be run across all documents in all databases, from command line. Something like: curl -i " http://localhost:8984/rest?run=get_query_result.xq&n=/root/*//calls/@name/s… " Basically, parameter "n" would hold the query. Embedded Mode performance too poor

Feature Request: serializable functions

Hello all, just out of curiosity, would it be too hard to have a serialization tool for functions that does more or less the inverse of inspect:functions i. e. given a function item returns the full function code? The use case is that I want to send out a client:execute request that is a XQuery script where functions can be attached at runtime selecting them out of a "toolbox" xqm module. And of course I don't want to manually parse the xqm to cut out the required function which could be done but is not very elegant. Example: declare function local:f($i as xs:integer) as xs:integer{ $i + 1 }; inspect:serialize(local:f#1) would yield the string "declare function local:f($i as xs:integer) as xs:integer{ $i + 1 };" I've seen that even if it is not possible to serialize or cast to string a function item, if the function is assigned to a map, calling map:serialize yields something similar to the full function code. So I thought maybe the serialization mechanism is already in place and would just need a bit of generalization. Regards, Marco.

Hi Carl, In the BaseX query parser, tokenization and parsing is a joint operation. in the past, we thought about splitting these steps, as the tokens could also be used in the GUI to provide better highlighting. However, we'd probably need some more coders interested in making that happen.. Currently, there is no way to prevent the unescaping the entities (the XML and XQuery specifications do not foresee this). One way to enforce the escaping of certain Unicode characters could be to provide character maps when serializing data [2]. Type of context in remote queries

Hi all, I'm not able to provide myself an answer to the fact that the first query returns an exception (cannot cast string to node) whereas the second works perfectly. client:connect("localhost", 1984, "admin", "admin") ! client:query(., "declare context item as node() external; .", {"" := <a/>}) client:connect("localhost", 1984, "admin", "admin") ! client:query(., "declare variable $x as node() external; $x", {"x" := <a/>}) I understand that the context is serialized as a string but isn't it the possibility to pass the type information along with the query and avoid explicit serialization on the client and deserialization on the remote server as it happens with variables? Feature request

Hi! It would be nice if there were a feature that basex could skip certain directories during the import. Now I have great trouble to remove (and later restore) all .svn-folders (Subversion) because I don't want them to be imported when I create a database. Perhaps this is already a feature, but then I could not find it. In that case, perhaps a more conspicuous place in the documentation would be a good idea. Thank you for an excellent product! WAR distribution

Hi, Last weekend I managed to deploy the BaseX WAR on the Amazon Web Services platform, as an 'Elastic Beanstalk' application. Now I want to create and manage databases and run queries via the REST interface. However, I am lost as how to do that. First, the BaseX pages tell me that the WAR distribution is 'deprecated'. (page http://docs.basex.org/wiki/Startup, remark "the WAR Application can be embedded in existing Java web servers (deprecated)." Why is the WAR distribution deprecated? Should I not use it anymore? And if so, how can I make a WAR out of the JAR distribution? Elastic Beanstalk can only deploy WAR files. Second, where to put the files? I can ssh into the application and transfer files, but where do I put database files I already created with the Windows version of BaseX? And where the .xq files? Paul

Import a large XML file and add an attribute on all children

NFS mount point query execution

HI Basex, We have created collections on a machine and attached that collection location to our application server system as a mount point. Basex is running in standalone mode in that application server.When we execute queries by placing the collections on local system we are getting response in 2sec's but when the same query is executed on a collection which is on mount point it is taking 18sec's of time.Could you please help us by telling us the way to reduce the time even when running the query on a collection which is on mount point. Cast exception on recursion+map

Hello all, I've stumbled upon an issue with the latest version and in particular the code I provide was working with 8.0 snapshot up to build 496C381 and with all previous official versions of course. Build 151df63 is the first build I'm aware of the difference. Shortly. In an input document I have a list of env nodes (sort of <env name="n">v</env>). They need to be parsed and "xquery:eval(uated)" in sequence because following env nodes may refer to preceding ones (i.e. <env name="n1">v1</env>, <env name="n2">{$n1}</env>). I've managed to do the job with the following code but now (as described in the preamble) I get the following cast exception in the xquery:eval: Stopped at [...]/file, 9/31: ---> (this points to the line with the xquery:eval call) [XPTY0117] Cannot cast xs:untypedAtomic to xs:QName. I've absolutely no idea why it started giving this error and even looking at the queryplan is too difficult in such a scenario for me. Anyone can help me out? Annoying behaviour of file:resolve-path

Hi, For a while I wasn't aware, then I noticed it and then I got annoyed by it. It's not a big issue but it does require extra code to work around this, in my opinion, annoying behaviour. When using file:resolve-path it depends if the file exists or not. The output is different. Say I have an existing directory F:\tmp then file:resolve-path('F:/tmp') => F:\tmp\ However, when I have a path that points to a non-existing directory (or file, we cannot know!) file:resolve-path('F:/tmp/not-exists') => F:/tmp/not-exists Notice the absence of a slash. I guess the assumption that is made is that in the future this will refer to a file and not a directory. The same behaviour occurs with file:path-to-uri(), and file:base-dir() also returns a path with a trailing slash. I think that this is annoying, or let's say at least, inconsistent behaviour and had me add code that defensively strips of trailing slash. I cannot rely on file:resolve-path results because if a directory doesn't exist it has no slash at the end, and if it does it has and sometimes I don't want to check for existence at that point. When combining paths I tend to use string-join($parts,'/') and having slash at the end of URL's and filesystem paths doesn't feel right so I always strip them off. Hope I didn't sound too grumpy ;-) Opinions? Guess, changing it would trip up a lot of existing path handling code. --Marc

Latest build is empty ...

Hi all, I have a chunk of code (focused on xquery:eval) that somehow broke between the builds 151df63 (not working) and 496C381 (working) of the latest snapshot. 7.9 worked. Since I don't remember when the two build were downloaded I'm not able to classify them according to time thus before signaling the different behaviour I wanted to test the code with the current latest snapshot. Unfortunately the download is not complete since the ZIP file doesn't contain BaseX.jar and neither of the files in the bin folder. Any clue on what happened? Thank you, Marco.

Hello, I'm trying to construct a query that will return the title and ID from a set of records, but instead of XML results I'd prefer JSON. I'd like the results to be in the following format: [ ['id': 'value1', 'title': 'Title1'], ['id': 'value2', 'title': 'Title2'], ['id': 'value3', 'title': 'Title3'] ] I understand I'd need to use the JSON module, but I'm having trouble getting the results into the right format. This is what I have so far: XQUERY for $poem in collection("lk") let $id := fn:string($poem/poem/@uuid) let $title := $poem/poem/title/text() order by $title return (<id>{$id}</id>, <title>{$title}</title>) This returns the XML, but does anyone know how to convert into the desired JSON format?
