connection provblems with basex 7.6

Hi, I am running a server in Java on a linux machine and want to connect to it from a windows machine (either GUI or java code). It is not working. I get as a response that the connection is refused. On the linux machine the server is running - I see the port being listened on. The firewall is also open on that port - I can telnet the port and get a response. Any idea? I use these settings in .basex # Client/Server Architecture HOST = 130.89.1.182 PORT = 19840 SERVERPORT = 1984 EVENTPORT = 1985 USER = XXXX PASSWORD = XXXX SERVERHOST = silo1.ewi.utwente.nl thanbks in advance. best regards Andreas

losing line breaks with xslt:transform(...)

Hi, I have small issue regarding the xslt:transform function (or what lies beneath). We are currently migrating a larger number of existing stylesheets into a basex-environment (before they were used with saxon on the filesystem). The problem is, that all line breaks which are generated explicitly in the stylesheets (e.g. by using <xsl:text>
</xsl:text>) get lost. Line feeds within a xsl:text element are correctly transformed. See below for the xslt and example output. First we thought this might be linked to the whitespace chopping of the database where the transformation result is stored, however I get the same behavior when directly looking at the output of xslt:transform(...) in the basex-gui. Is there any options to influence this behavior? We are using saxon9 within basex version 7.6. A Resilient BaseX deployment

Hi Folks, We are looking at deploying BaseX as a resilient deployment. If the BaseX server fails, then a stand-by server is to take over. My problem is how to replicate the data from the active Master to the passive slave. I found a thread from July 2012 proposing replicating the data directory using rsync. However, I have concerns about this. Firstly, if BaseX is writing to the database at the time of failure then the database on the Master would be corrupted, wouldn't it? Secondly, rsync does not guarantee a consistent file set is transferred. If BaseX updates the database during the rsync transfer, or the server fails during the rsync transfer, the database on the Slave would be corrupt, wouldn't it? I am considering using a cron job to do a "CREATE BACKUP" on the database at regular intervals and push the resulting zip file to the slave. If the Master fails during this process, we can detect the failure (at best we get an incomplete zip file, which will not be valid). If this happens we can fall back to the previous backup. If the Master fails, we detect this (using monit), start BaseX on the slave and do a database restore. I think this should give us a resilient deployment. In the worse case scenario (master dying during a replication) we lose changes since the last back-up, but at least we get a working database. Does this sound like a sound strategy? When I do a database restore, does BaseX automatically cope if the latest backup is corrupt? -- Andrew Miller Crocodile RCS Ltd

Basex json module and namespaces

Is there any way to make json module (mainly json:serialize) handle namespaces? I tried following: let $str := '{"name":"Mike Mac","address":{"postnumber":20221,"city":"NYC","street":"23 west A 22"},"email":"mm(a)gmail.com"}' let $json := json:parse($str) return json:serialize($json) and I get the string, with linefeed etc. But I would like to add the $json element inside another element, which have default namespace. let $str := '{"name":"Mike Mac","address":{"postnumber":20221,"city":"NYC","street":"23 west A 22"},"email":"mm(a)gmail.com"}' let $json := json:parse($str) let $wrapper := copy $x := <wrapper xmlns="namespace-uri"/> modify (insert node $json into $x) return $x let $json2 := $wrapper/*[1] return json:serialize($json2) (That is, insert the $json inside the <wrapper> -element, get it out and serialize it.) early EOF bei Fileupload

Hallo zusammen, ich habe ein Problem beim Fileupload. Dieser funktioniert nur sporadisch oder eher gesagt eigentlich funktioniert es in den seltensten Fällen. Ich bekomme dann immer einen 400 early EOF in den basex-Logs angezeigt. Ich habe im Internet recherchiert und herausgefunden, dass dies wohl an dem Jetty Servlet Container liegt, habe aber noch keine Lösung dafür gefunden. Ein Update der Jetty Version bringt leider auch nichts. Meine konkrete Implementierung schicke ich erst einmal nicht mit, da diese ja grundsätzlich funktioniert und ich eher vermute, dass das Problem eben am Jetty liegt. Das komische ist, dass der Request korrekt vom Browser abgeschickt wird und ich den Server und den Client auf einem gemeinsamen Rechner laufen habe. Hat jemand vielleicht ein ähnliches Problem oder dieses schon gelöst? Viele Grüße Florian

I'm trying to quickly prototype a REST server which uses BaseX for persistence using NodeJS. I'm able to create a session, add a document, query that document, and then close the session. Fine. But when I create a query that should return no results, it seems the NodeJS module for BaseX I'm using seems to completely misunderstand the result and never execute the callback. I looked at the protocol spec http://docs.basex.org/wiki/Server_Protocolbut it doesn't seem to give back what is specified here. I need a sanity check. Hello again, As we were testing the version 7.7, we ran into a problem (that actually existed in 7.6 too). We cannot produce json with restxq. I've attached a zip file with a trivial DTD and a eleven copies of a trivial XML file that follows that DTD. If I try to create a db from this content using BaseX77-20130716.145338.zip and try to skip corrupt files (which is what I need to do on the real content; the example doesn't have any) and parse the content against entities and the DTD (something else I need to do on the real content due to a purgatory of fixed attributes), it doesn't work. SKIP INTERNAL DTDs & Collection? CORRUPT PARSER ENTITIES N N N YES Y N N YES N Y N YES Y Y N YES N N Y YES Y N Y NO! Fails! (skips all) N Y Y NO! Fails! "tiny.dtd" (Line 1): No input found Y Y Y NO! Fails as the YNY case, skipping all input files. The attached example zip has the dtd and the files and the error message as well as these results. I'd expect all of these cases to work. High cpu utilization

Hi Basex, We have written a xquery which runs on a collection containing 600 xml files and the size of collection is 670MB.when we execute the xquery the CPU utilization is going up to 30-40% and as the number of hits that comes for executing this queries at a time will be around 20-40 because of high CPU utilzation for executing one query the processing speed of the remaning queries is getting delayed. Could you please check is some thing wrong in the query or do you have some suggestion which could improve the performance.Please find attachement of query and sample xml file. "XUDY0027 - Insert target must not be empty" with default namespaces

Hi, I'm working with latests BaseX distribution. The problem arises when I change from a specific namespace to a default namespace on the XML file. >From that moment on the insertion becomes messy, since some of them fail. Example: Here is the source XML that I insert into the newly created DataBase: <n:one xmlns:n="oneone"> <two /> </n:one> I execute then a xquery to insert a node into the empty tag "two": insert node <three/> into db:open("MyDB", "q471pa0lnovkfflso7ecsd6nj1.xml")/*:one/two In that case, I get a successful insertion: If I query the file (db:open("MyDB", "q471pa0lnovkfflso7ecsd6nj1.xml")/*:one) I get: <n:one xmlns:n="oneone"> <two> <three /> </two> </n:one> This is the normal behavior. The problem comes when I try to set that namespace as the default. So I create a new DataBase with the following XML: <one xmlns="oneone"> <two /> </one> When I try to execute the same xquery as before (insert node <three/> into db:open("MyDB", "q471pa0lnovkfflso7ecsd6nj1.xml")/*:one/two) I get the following error: rg.basex.core.BaseXException: Stopped at line 1, column 84: [XUDY0027] Insert target must not be empty I cannot understand then why the namespace affects the insertion this way :-/ I'm querying and insertion from a Java application by using JavaClient, although I guess this is not relevant here. Hi Raj, I am responding to the mailinglist so that maybe other people can benefit from your question as well. This is not a BaseX bug, indeed it returns the correct result. The problem is with your query and the scope of your selection. The variable $i contains the whole document, so basically it does not iterate much. You are then filtering out each document, which does not have a country with the id f0_136. As the whole factbook.xml does have one such element, it is passed on and all the country names are returned. What you instead want to do is to iterate over each country, not over each document. Performance doc vs db

Hi, Looking to compare the performance of BaseX on a number of machines I have been running the Xmark queries [1]. Query 11 seems to be one that causes the most stress. I then compared the performance executing query 11 against an xml file on the filesystem compared with importing it into a database and timing the query against the database: * Running from a database 36sec * Running from a file 9secs The xml was generated using xmlgen /f 0.1 /o test.xml This does not seem right to me. limiting time or space resources in calls to xquery:eval() ?

I'm contemplating the construction of an interface for advanced or dedicated users of a database, with a text box in which they type their queries as XQuery modules. (Non-advanced and non-dedicated users will make do with a variety of pre-defined queries; this interface is intended to provide an open-ended query interface for the few users who will need it.) One issue that arises is security: any use of an eval() function opens the door to code injection attacks. For now, I'm inclined to think that BaseX's rule that xquery:eval() does not accept updating expressions suffices to protect the database from harm. Parsing the query and declining potentially harmful queries is also a possibility, if I can persuade myself I can distinguish harmful from harmless queries. (Comments and advice on this topic welcome, even though it's not the focus of this question.) A second issue is resource usage. Imagine a hostile user who writes a query designed to tie up the server for a long time and consume a lot of memory. Or imagine a non-hostile but naive user who unintentionally concocts an extremely expensive query. Is there a way to put a call to eval() (or any call to the BaseX HTTP server) into some kind of box and specify limits on the amount of CPU time, the amount of clock time, and/or the amount of storage to be available for its evaluation? Hello, it seems to me there is a couple of issues concerning the handling of indentation (serialization parameter "indent"). a) Using "indent=no" whitespace-only text nodes between element nodes are removed b) Using "indent=yes" the content of elements with xml:space="preserve" is indented, too I suppose both behaviors are in contraction to the spec ( http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt-xquery-serialization/#xml-indent ). As a particular consequence, (a) seems to preclude making an exact copy of a document (fragment) - all whitespace-only text nodes vanish. And as a consequence of (b) one has no possibility to locally protect the whitespace used in the source document, as required for example when reusing "programlisting" elements of docbook.
