Corrupt database

Hi, We are using the REST API with BaseX 7.6. After doing approximately 100 PUT requests for creating documents in a database, we get the error listed below. So far I haven't been able to reproduce it, but I have the database if that would be any help. Any suggestion on how to un-corrupt the database? Improper use? Potential bug? One long running read query blocking other read xqueries execution

I use BaseX 7.7 build from couple days ago with GLOBALLOCK=false. I run using client-server mode. I have one long running read-only xQuery (say query1) that needs to be optimized but for now it takes about 3 minutes to run. While query1 is running all other read-only xQueries are queued up (from BaseX server logs) and wait for query1 completion. After query1 is done, all other xQueries get executed one after the other. Note query1 only accesses one document and all other xQueries run in parallel operate on a different document. Before I debugged this more, can you let me know if a read-only query can block other read-only query? and if so any hints at where I should look at? I am also in the process of debugging this more, so if I can get a sample code ready, I will share with you guys soon for making this easy. Thanks, Srini

Out of Main Memory; bytea type

Hello all, my basex-script should fetch 10.000something XML-files automatically from a website and insert their content into a external PostgreSQL-database. After about 8.000 files my script stops and I get "Out of Main Memory". I found your discussion with "kgfhjjgrn" [1] regarding this issue, but I'm not sure whether these options apply to my problem - I do not build a basex-database but an external one. Will autoflush=false and flushing by myself help with this? Second, I want to insert some xs:base64Binary into my PostgreSQL database, but I cannot find the correct sql:parameter type for the bytea-column. Could you please help me with my issues? For reasons I won't go into here, I have developed a desire to know something I've never particularly wondered about in the past: Which version of XML NCNames does BaseX use? The one given in XML 1.0 5th edition and in XML 1.1? or the one given in earlier versions of XML? And while I'm looking for implementation-defined properties -- is there a place in the documentation that lists BaseX's decisions on the various implementation-defined items listed in http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath20/#id-impl-defined-items and http://www.w3.org/TR/xquery/#id-impl-defined-items ? I want to call BaseX.main() from a Java GUI and need to display errors to the user. There are no exceptions thrown by this method, and I do not see a way to redirect so that I can capture and display. Thanks, David

Best practices for concurrency

Hi, I've read through the online example on server concurrency, however, currently I'm not running a BaseXServer instance I'm just running things locally. I want multiple threads in my application to be able to query the database at once without treading on each others toes. What's the best approach for doing this? I have tried querying the database using different threads but I keep getting internal BaseX errors which leads me to think I'm going about this the wrong way. Cheers Gary

basex client can't connect: Can't communicate with the server.

Hi, I use basex on Debian wheezy with Oracle Java version 1.6.0_43. Whenever I try to connect to the basex server the client tells me "Can't communicate with the server." If I enable a netcat server on port 2000 for test reasons and run wireshark in order to capture the traffic I get no traffic on port 2000, not even the TCP three way handshake by running this command: java -cp BaseX77.jar org.basex.BaseXClient -p2000 -n localhost -d Do you have any suggestions why as far as I can see the basex client doesn't even try to connect to port 2000 on localhost but just prints that it can't communicate with the server? bug in processing XPATH with this simple regular expression?

Take this input: <div id="ps-content">foobar</div> and apply this XPATH 2+: //div[matches(@id,"^s-content$")] In BaseX command-line it matched! despite the fact that "^" in regex language means "the start of the string". With Saxon and Xidel command-line it correctly doesn't match. Why does it match in BaseX?

An inconvenient truth . . ?

Am I correct in assuming I have hit a dreaded limit of BaseX when I see the output below? Which I presume may be the node limit (2,147,483,648) . . ? As I am dealing with 689,701 Files in 814,855 Folders which amounts to 5.32 GB on disk. (I am running BaseX 7.7) If so, then are then any automated ways of having BaseX automatically start feeding to a second instance? It would be nice to NOT have to manually partition the content in advance. Doubtful question on xquery:eval ...

Hello all, I just would like to know if this wanted or not ... When I run the following query in the GUI with all databases closed for $rvs at $pos in collection('examples/valuesets/resolved') return $rvs it returns the correct dataset. The same query put into an xquery:eval xquery:eval("for $rvs at $pos in collection('examples/valuesets/resolved') return $rvs") gives a result if the database "examples" has been opened. XQuery to insert nodes in XML File

Dear Team, I am trying to insert few nodes in a XML File. But in reality the nodes are not inserting in the XML File!! Hi Christian, the problem also exists with DBNode, isn't it? DBNode internally stores the pre of the node at time of instantiation of the object. After an update of DB the internally stored pre points to a wrong node. Of course one could use the ID of DBNode and use db:open-id(id) to get a new DBNode with correct pre. But this approach doesn't work with DOM API. My question is, is there a possible solution that allows me to use DOM interface (We need DOM, because we want to use BaseX to replace an old DOM based parser class without reimplementing everything) and updating expressions? BaseX Script memory leak . . ?

I have a BaseX script (.bxs) I am running that does queries in batches (sets of 5k documents), but as it progresses it bogs down in speed, does not release memory between sets even if I force it to close and reopen the db between queries, and eventually runs out of memory. But, if I break the same BaseX script into separate files still doing the same exact batches it is extremely fast and memory efficient. Very suggestive of a memory leak . . . I am running on BaseX 7.6.1 Beta. Any thoughts? Is there a way to force the script to do garbage collection?

Binding variables in scripts (bxs)

Hi, I'm sure you will forgive me if this is as dumb as I'm afraid it might be ... trying to cover all possibilities here. We recently upgraded (now on 7.7beta) and external scripts stopped working as expected -- variable bindings of the form SET BINDINGS $db=my-db,$start=20001,$count=10000 no longer had any effect. Instead, the logic fell back to use values declared for the variables in the XQuery, which had: declare variable $db := 'your-db'; declare variable $start := 1; declare variable $count := 1000; etc. When we removed the declarations from the XQuery, things started working again. (Note that my assumption of a causal relation here could be wrong.) Should I never have put those declarations in to begin with (even as defaults, a la XSLT parameter declarations)? Is this a BaseX question or an XQuery question? I would like to become enlightened. Hi, Sorry for posting the first message in HTML format (damn web mailer...). Here is it again in Text only: I have a problem using BaseX Java DOM Node Interface and updating XQuerys in combination. The problem is that on updating the XML structure the node "pointer" moves to another location therefore the BXNode Object points to the wrong node. I have investigated a bit and the problem seems to be the 'pre' attribute in Class DBNode that points to the wrong/old location. There is already an uninque ID in ANode that could be used to identify the right node. But a ID->pre mapping table is missing. Any solution/workaround for this issue? Catching BXFE0001 when fetching binary

Hi folks, I'm a student working on my bachelor thesis. I use BaseX to read large XML files and forward them to a PostgreSQL database. Additionally I want to fetch images via URI and add them to the database-records. While fetching these images, I have to test three different file extensions for each image, as my source does not use one single image format (but jpg, png and gif). First I tried checking with fn:doc-available($uri) weather that certain URI is available, but this obviously only works for XML-documents. baseX-core vs baseX-api

So, I have a couple of (hopefully simple) questions about the Java APIs provided by BaseX. Based on the comments in the examples, it looks like the function calls in the RunQueries.java example (https://github.com/BaseXdb/basex-examples/blob/master/src/main/java/org/bas…) are strictly local calls that operate directly on local XML documents - there's no BaseX server involved, no client communication, no files created in org.basex.path, etc. Is that correct? What's the difference between the queries in RunQueries.java and QueryCollection.java? My guess from skimming the documentation is that, per above, RunQueries just uses BaseX's XQuery API, without taking advantage of BaseX's indexing, etc capabilities, whereas QueryCollection creates a (local) BaseX server, indexes the document, and then its queries would be accelerated using those indexes. (x)query, db lookup, and update in one step

Hello All, I'm relatively new to basex and xquery - but am using basex as a large report repository. I'd like to try and perform the following xquery - but with some intermediate steps: xquery for $rep in collection('coll')/Report let $attr0 := $rep/@attr0 return (replace value of node $rep/@attr1 with 'zzz') The actual value represented by 'zzz' above must be based on a separate (physical) database lookup for each attribute value $attr0 in the collection ( i.e. the values of attr1 is a (non-trivial lookup) function of attr0. Is this a scenario in which multiple queries would have to be made based on the number of documents in the collection ? Perhaps there is some slick way of including a call out to some method to such that the 'zzz' above is replaced with something like: JavaModule.doLookup($attr0) ? I'm executing xquery from a jruby application so either the ruby or the java client can be used (perhaps that is somewhat irrelevant). Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Buzz

Java binding for Enums?

Hi, Is there a way to access Java Enums via the Java bindings. I am trying to implement something like [1] without writing any Java. Comments after XML declaration cause XQQueryException

Hi, I'm noticing an issue where an XQQueryException is thrown if there are comments after XML declaration. I noticed it since license headers often go in this location (e.g. Apache License 2.0) Here is an example program that demonstrates the issue https://gist.github.com/dustinschultz/5718281 I believe the bug resides within the xqj-basex code but I have no idea where post bug reports and the source doesn't seem to be available. External variable of type document-node in GUI

Hi, I can't seem to figure out how to bind an external variable as a document. I've searched all of the docs and am at a bit of loss. Is the following possible? possible? I've tried the following: http://pastebin.com/sbekQZNP With the following XQuery: http://pastebin.com/W8ZcMxJ9 But it always results in the error 'Invalid cast from xs:untypedAtomic to document-node()' - how does one tell it to be an document-node and not an xs:untypedAtomic.
