If OPTIMIZE ALL iterates over all available databases, why does it fail if there isn't one open when invoked? Or am I misunderstanding what it does?

The class code org.basex.server.ClientSession coincides roughly with the class code BaseXClient.java provided as an example of Java client in https://github.com/BaseXdb/basex-api/tree/master/src/main/java? eclipse integration

Hi, I am getting this error while trying to run xquery inside Eclipse. I followed all the steps mentioned in BaseX-Eclipse integration documentation. Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:217) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:205) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:321) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:294) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:266) Could not find the main class: . adding documents to a collection

Hi, I will implement a web interface to edit and update specific nodes in an existing database. This will probably be controlled mainly by the node-id. Therefore it is no good idea to change the collection during the editing process because node-ids would change. However, it seems that when adding a document to a collection it will be integrated *after* all existing documents. Is it guaranteed that when adding a new document to a collection, no existing node-ids are changed? I would have to re-index the collection when adding new documents. Reusing connections to BaseX

Hi, I have a question about the BaseX server. We're using it from a J2EE application (which is the client), and so we've implemented a connection pool in the style done by many other database drivers. We are getting Broken Pipe errors, indicating that a connection has been disconnected. My question: when does BaseX disconnect, and is there a way for a client to learn this? For instance, if there's a syntax error in a XQUERY, should BaseX disconnect? If a BaseXException is thrown by the Java driver? Currently, we mark the connection as dead when an IOException or EOF occurs during the handling of one request, but we keep it alive when a BaseXException occurs, such as when we submit an ill-formed XQUERY. We could avoid pooling, connecting and disconnecting for every query, but obviously that would be expensive. Or we could "ping" the server before issueing the actual query, but that's awkward, too. How do others handle this problem? - Godmar

Recursive query performance

Howdy, all -- First, a note that bears saying -- I'm very, *very* excited by BaseX; this is my first use of the database, and I'm already extremely impressed. My immediate use case centers around the following pair of functions: declare function local:immediate_requirements($e as element(project)) as element(project)* { doc("inventory.xml")/report/project[ ./classifiers/ivy/publications/artifact/@name = $e/classifiers/ivy/dependencies/dependency/@name ] }; declare function local:requirements($e as element(project)) as element(project)* { let $direct := local:immediate_requirements($e) return $direct | $direct/local:requirements(.) }; However -- while evaluating immediate_requirements() is very fast (on the scale of 72ms for one of the larger project elements in my sample corpus, and a total under 1600ms ms to evaluate for _every_ project element in said corpus), evaluating the recursive requirements() function for even a single top-level project can require as much as two minutes to execute. Should I be writing this function differently? My expectation was that, due to XQuery's functional nature, the database should be able to avoid needing to evaluate local:immediate_requirements more than once for a single input element, capping the worst-case execution time not far over the cost of evaluating that single-stage evaluation once over every possible project element in the document; however, true worst-case execution time is obviously far worse. Thank you very much for any guidance on offer, and for this excellent tool.

Hi, I have three questions concerning working with the full-text index: The first question is about "distance" information. Given this query: (1) 'contains text "Kopf Sand Stecken" all words using stemming using language "de"' There is no difference to: (2) 'contains text ("Nase" ftand "Sand" ftand "stecken") using stemming using language "de"' both queries deliver 4 nodes. If I would like to find the query terms within a certain distance, adding 'distance at most 10 words' for (1) I get 2 nodes (a subset of the 4 from the first run), but for (2) I still get all 4 nodes. The information concerning distance doesn't seem to be considered. For my application this is no problem, since I have to go for the "ftand"-variant to get proper marking, but in general this looks strange. The second question is about "ftand" and "ftor". If I try these queries: (3) 'contains text ("Nase" ftand "Sand" ftand "stecken") using stemming using language "de" distance at most 10 words' (4) 'contains text ("Kopf" ftand "Sand" ftand "stecken") using stemming using language "de" distance at most 10 words I get 2 hits for (3) and 11 for (4). So I assumed I would get 13 hits (the ones from (3) and the ones from (4) when changing the query to: (5) 'contains text (("Nase" ftor "Kopf") ftand "Sand" ftand "stecken") using stemming using language "de" distance at most 10 words' However, I get 6 hits -- none of them containing "Nase" (there is no difference, if the query starts with '"Nase" ftor "Kopf"' or with '"Kopf" ftor "Nase"'). Did I mess something up? The third question is about the full-text index itself. When applying fuzzy search or using wildcards, the full-text index is not applied -- resulting in a time out on my website, I need 341859.09 ms in the GUI for applying 'ft:mark (//*[text() contains text ("Korb" ftand "geben") using fuzzy][self::*:p or self::*:l])' to my 3 GB collection. The information at the "Full-Text" tab says: - Structure: Trie - Stemming: ON - Case Sensitivity: ON - Diacritics: ON - Language: German - Size: 1 GB - Entries: 1743744 I created the full-text index with the option "Support Wildcards", too, but this information is not shown in the Database properties. When creating the index, "SET WILDCARDS true" is shown. I used stemming, casesensitivity, diacritics, and wildcards -- is this an unrecommended combination? Problem with "create database"?

Hello! I see the command "create database" creates a database although there is another with the same name, destroying the existing one. I think that this is not normal... I've tested using the option in the GUI and also using Java client (method create in BaseXClient.java) Thanks, Isidre

Hi, when displaying search results, I would like to show more or less following and preceding nodes depending on the fond node name. However, when running the same on the server using a perl client (applying quoting for variables), I get the "P" for p-nodes but nothing for "l"-nodes. The conditional expression is correct, if I replace then $pre with then <p>LLL</p> everything works fine, "<p>LLL</p>" will be printed. If I skip the condition and allow preceding and following nodes for every $i, I get preceding and following nodes for "p"-nodes only, but not for "l"-nodes -- there is simple nothing. Problem with XMLDB in BaseX 7.0.2 and 7.1.1

Hello I'm trying examples XMLDB to access BaseX and none of the 3 (XMLDBCreate, XMLDBInsert, XMLDBQuery) work ok. All have the same error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.AbstractMethodError: org.basex.api.xmldb.BXDatabase.getNames()[Ljava/lang/String; at org.xmldb.api.DatabaseManager.registerDatabase(Unknown Source) at proves.XMLDBCreate.main(XMLDBCreate.java:31) I tried it in 7.0.2 and 7.1.1 versions. Is there any solution? I found the same error reported on March 2011 for BaseX users and the response of Michael Seiferlein https://mailman.uni-konstanz.de/pipermail/basex-talk/2011-March/001395.html I am a Catalan teacher of computer science and I am writing a book on native XML DB access, among other products, and I intend to submit the BaseX local API and also XMLDB and XQJ. Collections and Documents

Hello BaseX Team, In reading the documentation and mail archives, it seems to me that BaseX does not support documents in terms of having a single URI referring to a single document node. For example, if I add a document using the db:add function: db:add("DB", document { <a/> }, "doc.xml") And subsequently attempt to retrieve it using the doc function: fn:doc("doc.xml") I get a FODC0002 error. This is discussed in the mail archives, and so far as I can tell this is because BaseX only works with collections. It does not really address the concept of a documents (excuse me if I am over simplifying the issue here). In other words, I am free to add more document nodes under the name "doc.xml" therefore it is technically a collection as opposed to a document. Is this correct? A fairly early mailing list thread from 2010-07 addresses a similar and suggests an alternative approach where one might retrieve a document in a collection as follows: for $doc in collection('DB') where matches(document-uri($doc), 'doc.xml') return $doc But, doesn't this run afoul of the W3C recommendation which states for the fn:docucument-uri function that: "In the case of a document node $D returned by the fn:doc function, or a document node at the root of a tree containing a node returned by the fn:collection function, it will always be true that either fn:document-uri($D) returns the empty sequence, or that the following expression is true: fn:doc(fn:document-uri($D)) is $D. It is implementation-defined whether this guarantee also holds for document nodes obtained by other means, for example a document node passed as the initial context node of a query or transformation." In other words, if document-uri is returning 'doc.xml' for a node in collection('DB') then I should be able to get that same document node using the doc function. I ask these questions because we are interested in being able to maintain XML artifacts as singular documents, and using the collection hierarchy to do things such as storing temporary and archived version of these artifacts. The approach we are taking right now assumes that there is only one document-node under each 'document'. I want to understand the limitations of the collection and document implementation in BaseX so that I don't make any wrong assumptions (as I think I already have). Finally, assuming the interpretations are correct, are there plans to make any changes in the implementation to support something more in line with the hierarchy of db->collection->document? I have seen in previous threads that you were seeking feedback on this, and I am curious to know if you still are. Is there a major drawback you see to this model that perhaps I have not considered? Using the GUI to see a database created with Java

If there is a module: xquery version "1.0"; module namespace m="http://www.host.ru/xquery/m"; declare variable $m:db := "mydb"; declare function m:up() as xs:string { let $new-doc := <root-element><item>1</item></root-element> let $update := db:add($m:db, document { $new-doc }, "id1.xml") return "Result string" }; and I use it from python API or basexclient utility. Use as: xquery import module namespace m="http://www.host.ru/xquery/m" at "/tmp/test.xqy"; m:up() I get an error: Stopped at line 8, column 4 in /tmp/test.xqy: [XUST0001] Let expression: no updating expression allowed.
