Ruby client causing java.net.SocketException on server

Good evening, I am using Ruby on Rails and BaseX for some hobby projects, and I have noticed the new Ruby client API + BaseX 7.0 causes java.net.SocketExceptions (see bottom of this message for complete error + stack trace) on the server. After inspecting the new client code, this seemed to have been caused by the new query iteration method which uses a cache. Reproducing this is easy; execute the QueryExample.rb script from the repository (make sure to first remove 'query.init', which is still in the example but has been removed from the API). It raises the Exception every single time for me. Note the query does seem to return the expected result so I could just ignore the Exception but that does not seem like the right thing to do :) On a side note, the 'if more()' in the 'next' method seems superfluous as query.next should only be called inside a 'while query.more' loop anyway. Effectively 'query.more' is now called twice in that loop before the cache is read. Kind regards, Daniël Knippers ps. Clustering/replicating?

All: We're looking into possibly building large scale infrastructure around BaseX and wondering if there is any information available around database replication (read replicas) and running BaseX in clusters? Also, when I submit a query to a BaseX server, is there a way to limit the amount of time/resources the query can comsume? For example, can I say 'fail this query if it takes more than 30 seconds or 1Gb of memory'? many thanks *P

Hi, I just installed basex for the first time and I am very impressed and really looking forward to using it. Thanks for making such a great tool available for free! I'm not really a developer so this might be an obvious question: using basex's http server, what is the best strategy for ajax-style communication between browser and db? I am aware of a few approaches: 1) direct httprequest to host:8984/my_db/somequery, but going across ports seems to violate "same origin policy" 2) using jsonp 3) calling from browser to server-script (like the php example in basex docs), which handles request to the db All responses are greatly appreciated, Colin

Performance of Basex 7.0 XQuery execution

Hi there, I am running relatively simply XQuery over a Basex database read in from about 100 MB of XML. While performance in general is fantastic, with most queries completing in a few seconds, I am getting worryingly slow performace on certain queries using XPath axes such as preceding-sibling. For example, the following simple (if a bit silly) query takes over 30 minutes to execute: /tns:pois/tns:poi[not(preceding-sibling::tns:poi)] For what it's worth, there are only about 100,000 instances of the <tns:poi> element. So the immediate question is whether this performance is to be expected. If not, what are the obvious things to look at in terms of performance tuning? HTTP API DB access

Hi list, while debugging my application, I noticed that when I send a request to the HTTP API of basex, the request is then sent by basex to itself via a localhost connection. That is, the HTTP API part of basex sends a message to the BaseX native API through TCP. Now, I wonder, is this really necessary? After all, both reside in the same process, so going through the OS feels a bit wasteful here. I noticed that I can change this behaviour if I pass the "-l" flag to basexhttp ("local mode"), so the code to directly use the in-process DB obviously exists. I wonder why it can only be used in the local mode which entirely disables the "native" BaseX API? Kind regards, Ralf

BaseX 7.0 as WebDAV server - first tests

Hi all Thanks for great new version. I just want to share very first test of BaseX as WebDAV server. It works with BaseX version 7.0!!! 1. Started BaseX GUI 2. Imported directory with 12000 xml files as new database named jsdi 3. started basexhttp.bat 4. stopped BaseX GUI 5. went to browser to http://localhost:8984/webdav/ and nothing there found (but no error either) 6. Created new network place to show content of WebDAV repository (see instructions here <http://kb.iu.edu/data/araf.html#xp>) 7. Browsing new network place on Windows A bit slow, but there are 12000 files, so no surprise 8. Created new folder there named subdir and dragged-dropped there another 4 xml files (these files have other elements then original ones) 9. Opening BaseX GUI 10. Searching for the elements from new files - and they are found. My first feeling is - Impressive Jan *Ing. Wiki: "external" internal links

Hi basex developers, the wiki uses external links for internal URLs in some places, for example on the start/main page, for all the Category links. By "external" I mean links that are enclosed in single-brackets [] only, while the resources they link to are in the same wiki and could be referenced by double-brackets [[]]. This is confusing because external links get an icon to indicate they are, well, external - so I was surprised to end up in the same wiki after clicking them ;-) Is there a reason this was done, or just a mistake/copy-n-paste-problem? Hi Just gave this a quick try on tomcat 6 ubuntu 10.10 Apache Tomcat/6.0.28 1.6.0_26-b03 Sun Microsystems Inc. Linux 2.6.35-30-generic i386 It would not load, the logs had the message Tomcat6 error : jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: ... Following this<http://www.simplysimple.info/tomcat-error-jar-not-loaded-servlet-spec-23-se…>I removed servlet-api-2.5.20081211.jar from the war and got a bit further Hitting permission problems Saving properties in "/usr/share/tomcat6/.basex"... /usr/share/tomcat6/.basex could not be written. Should it be attempting to save stuff here? /Andy

Hi Jens, As per Ralf's note I do not see any more ports opened by the server process, but the configuration is working well for serverhost as localhost as well as other IPs. node.js interface?

Hi, I wonder if you have any plans to add a Node.js interface to the basex-api client set? I think this could be very useful. In design terms I imagine it might look very similar the Redis client https://github.com/bnoguchi/redis-node. /Andy

Basex HTTP server : path not found error

Christian, I am trying to set up Basex HTTP server and run some xquery scripts through REST style. In http://docs.basex.org/wiki/REST#Usage_Examples, we have example http://localhost:8984/rest/factbook/index.xq to run index.xq scripts. Where are we keeping xquery scripts? In .basex configuration file, we have DBPATH = /Users/xxx/BaseXData HTTPPATH = /Users/xxx/BaseXHTTP REPOPATH = /Users/xx/BaseXRepo Which one is for folder that keeps xquery scripts? Above query returns "Path does not exist." error. I have compiled the recent version of Basex and use it on Mac OSX Lion 64 bit. Thanks Erol Akarsu

Hi. I am looking for options to configure the server as documented in the Wiki, but I can not find .basex file anywhere, and there seems to be no documentation on the Wiki. I am specifically looking for settings to bind the server to a particular IP address. Thanks Loke
