limit on number of attributes

Trying to use BaseX to index the XML version of the Unicode Database, I got a message saying an element had been encountered with too many attributes (more than 32). Is there a way to lift this limit for a particular database? If one wants to work with the Unicode database in XML (and let's face it, it will be a lot nicer in XML than in the semicolon-delimited form of the early Unicode releases), then one is going to have to work with elements which have a lot of attributes (haven't counted, probably fewer than a hundred). -- C. renaming a database

Last year [1], the functionality to rename a database was requested. We need this functionality as well. The option to rename the folder would require shutting down, and restarting, the BaseX server, which is not a good idea. The other alternative would be to retrieve the entire XML content of the source db, then create the target db with that content; this is wasteful and inefficient for large db. Dear Yoann Maingon, your code snippet looks fine to me. I would assume that a third command won't return any results, as they should have been deleted from your database: print $session->execute(“XQUERY //definition/item[@type=’test’]”); If that's not the case, or if I didn't answer your question, feel free to give us more details on your problem. How to delete a node with PHP?

Hi, I've started using BaseX as a database for a PHP project. I can open the database and add nodes but I can't delete nodes. I've tested the XQUERY on the GUI and it works just fine. Any clue? Problem with Wikipedia database (or a more general namespace efficiency problem?)

As both a stress test and to experiment, I created a database using a recent complete (current page) dump of English Wikipedia, a hefty file of 30.5 GB. I don't have enough memory apparently to create a full-text index of all of that text, so I created the DB without one. My first testing came up empty until I realized that I needed to deal with the namespace (ugh). Then I tried: declare default element namespace "http://www.mediawiki.org/xml/export-0.4/ "; //siteinfo This contains a small amount of data and occurs only once in the document (at /mediawiki/siteinfo). However, it's extremely slow (~33 seconds on my system). The query plan is: <IterPath> <Root/> <IterStep axis="child" test="*:mediawiki"/> <IterStep axis="child" test="*:siteinfo"/> </IterPath> Timing: - Parsing: 0.35 ms - Compiling: 0.22 ms - Evaluating: 33316.32 ms - Printing: 0.3 ms - Total Time: 33317.19 ms My surmise is that millions of node names are being checked rather than a path index being used to rapidly access the appropriate node(s). I don't think such a simple query should fail to be properly optimized. Another surmise is that it's related to namespaces not being indexed (?). While personally I very much dislike namespaces, they are common, and they have to be efficiently handled. To see if it made a difference, I also tried an explicitly named namespace test: declare namespace w="http://www.mediawiki.org/xml/export-0.4/"; //w:siteinfo This results in: <IterPath> <Root/> <IterStep axis="descendant" test="w:siteinfo"/> </IterPath> Timing: - Parsing: 0.33 ms - Compiling: 0.07 ms - Evaluating: 54288.51 ms - Printing: 0.3 ms - Total Time: 54289.23 ms So performance is even worse.

EXPath ZIP Module

This module allows everyone to extract files from ZIP archives, list its contents, create new archives, and update existing archives. As far as we know, our implementation is the first one which is simply usable out of the box, and may be the first complete implementation as well. Server Crash

Hi, I am using BaseX 6.5. I am running into a server crash. Could you fix it ? @Christian and Lukas: Many thanks for helping me with the transform expression so far. However, I am not sure if we can use both non-updating and updating expressions in a single query ? Hi Phil (cc'ed to the list), as far as I can judge, XQuery expressions are too heterogeneous to provide realistic cost estimations. While our query compiler has some notion of "costs", those values are all relative, and used to select the (presumably) cheapest query plan or index access. The same applies to the estimation of query results: the costs and size of single XQuery results can vary a lot, as a single result node can span several MB, while a single atomic item may just take a few bytes. Installer removes path variable on vista

Hi there, I just installed baseX 6.5.1 on a windows vista machine. Well, after installation my %PATH%-variable just contained exactly one entry: "C:\Program Files\BaseX\bin". The rest of my original path variable was removed by the installer... :-( Best regards, Marcus Beranek

Facing problem while deploying BaseX under JBoss

Hello, I am facing problem while deploying BaseX under JBoss due to JBoss’s (Virtual File System) for the I/O operations. So “ClassLoader.getResource” under JBoss context returns JBoss resource and then getContent() returns “JBoss Stream” but not the java.io.InputStream, this can be fix by using getResourceAsStream which returns InputStream Changes required in org.basex.core.Lang.java at Line No: 66 ----------------------------------------------------------- final BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader( (InputStream) url.getContent(), Token.UTF8)); ----------------------------------------------------------- Above line needs to be replaced with below: --------------------------------------------------------------- InputStream stream = Lang.class.getResourceAsStream(path); final BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader( stream, Token.UTF8)); --------------------------------------------------------------- Regards, Ashish Jain

BaseX wiki upgraded for me to first class resource (just beside Wikipedia)

Hi I noticed, many answers in this forum got shortened a lot in last weeks into simple short url pointing into wiki. For couple of years I use simple trick to search quickly terms in Wikipedia - it works for me on Firefox as well as nowadays on Google Chrome (other browsers will probably work that way too). - using keyword en, pressing Tab, entering searched term on English Wikipedia and pressing enter I get the page I need - the same with cs for Czech Wikipedia - *Today I added bx for BaseX Wiki as I found myself searching this site so often* Chrome allows to control this by wrench tool - first tab (Basic) - section Search - button Manage en - http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=%s bx - http://docs.basex.org/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=%s&go=Go Now I have (almost) all the knowledge of BaseX team at my fingertips - thanks for it DBIS team. Adding new doc into existing collection by means of XQuery

Hi Is there any method, how to add new doc into existing collection? I studied XQUF and it seems, like it can only update existing nodes. Options I was thinking about are - fn:put() - it is supposed for publishing into external documents, but if I could use uri of collection in BaseX and BaseX would accept it... - using database functions<http://docs.basex.org/wiki/Database_Functions>, but also here I do not see anything, what would add a doc The motivation is simple - if I could add docs by XQuery, I can save some roundtrips of data to insert Workaround is also not so difficult - simply using some sort of container doc in target collection and then modifying its nodes (putting here content of complete logical doc) instead of adding complete doc. Infrastructure improvements

Given the well deserved growth of BaseX, I was wondering if there are plans to improve bug/feature tracking capability, as well as the discussion system. For the first, I have used the popular JIRA system ( http://www.atlassian.com/). While I think it could use improvements, it's pretty powerful and I think it would be better than what exists now. They say that it's free to use for open source projects. I have found the GNU mailing list system to be cumbersome to use, since it is all email based, and the archives are not automatically searchable, nor grouped in any way by subject. There are a number of free discussion board systems, including at least one based on Java, and I think that would be a big improvement. I would be willing to help out with a transition to better tools if there is interest.

...has the default value of yes, as noted at http://docs.basex.org/wiki/Serialization, the XQuery Serialization does not appear to recommend/enforce a default (http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt-xquery-serialization-30/#XML_OMIT-XML-DECLARATION), but the XForms spec does (http://www.w3.org/TR/xforms11/#submit) and the recommendation in XForms spec is the default value of false (=no), which is different from the default value of yes(=true) used by BaseX. While it (the way things are) is not a major (or minor) headache (for me), if it is a minor change and can be factored in in some future release, that would be useful (it would mean I have to set one less query param if I want the default behaviour of XForms).
