BaseX returns: <entry xmlns="http://libx.org/xml/libx2" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"> which obviously is invalid XML. - Godmar

Hi Artur, I just found out this all comes down to a mistake in our XQuery Update documentation - I'm sorry to cause that confusion. The XQuery Update specification says this: If you have an expression like ... *'replace value of node A with B'* the expression *B* is evaluated with a text node constructor. That means the result of *B *is either a sequence of text nodes or an empty sequence. Considering your example the outcome is valid - it's the documentation which is wrong. It's simply not possible to replace the *value of* an element node (its descendants) with other elements. I'll take care of this inconsistency. Hope this clears things up, thanks for pointing that out! Hi Working in GUI is nice, I only like using shift+Delete control+Insert shift+Insert shortcuts for working with clipboard and currently it does not work in XQuery window in BaseX GUI See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut,_copy,_and_paste#Common_keyboard_shortcuts I am working on MS Windows. BaseX6.5 - how to add documents into collection over wire (probably using ADD command)

Hi I need to insert documents into BaseX collection. As data are not always available directly as files and as sometime my server is remote to me, I need a method to add documents remotely. With older BaseX (I think BaseX 6.4) I was able to use add commend in the way add as doc1 <root/> This works now. But I am unable to insert anything, what has any attribute in this manner add as doc1 <root att="att"/> This keeps complaining and prints back help on the console. I am using basexclient.bat and Python API. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any advice. Jan

data corruption

Hello, Unfortunately I am unable to use BaseX (6.5) as I keep getting data corruption. I run BaseX on a dedicated server. The xml-datafiles I insert into the database have the following layout: <EEGData bla="x" > <signal name="x"> <timeslot start="2008-07-24T14:22:16">-53.2942688282 -37.5091841347 -35.6337285276 (many more values)</timeslot>  </signal>  </EEGData> Running "list" on the client returns the following: Name Documents Size Path ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------ fullxml 3789 522153128560 /path/to/xml This database was created by running the command: java -cp basex.jar org.basex.BaseXClient -c "create db fullxml /path/to/xml/files/" The problems start when I execute the "list fullxml" command, this returns: > list fullxml Possible bug? searching against base-uri

When I search against lyrics in my song database using "contains text", text is found where ever the input string is found, even if the string is simply part of a word. So "wor" would find "word". If I search with base-uri($song)[ . contains text "wor"] the results are interesting. Say I have the following files in my database: c:\song\music in the air c:\songs1\songbird review c:\songs2\songbird cafe c:\lyrics\songbirds singing c:\Songs3\I like to sing c:\Songs4\Songs worth singing searching with base-uri($song)[ . contains text "song"] will return: c:\song\music in the air c:\songs1\songbird review c:\songs2\songbird cafe c:\lyrics\songbirds singing c:\songs4\Songs worth singing searching with base-uri($song)[ . contains text "songs"] will return: c:\songs4\Songs worth singing My conclusion is that after the last slash (and in the database, of course, they are forward slashes) the string can be found as a substring but before the last slash, the string must be found as that whole section of the path (I've tried this with multi-word path sections and the entire path section must be specified or that node is not selected.) This is not particularly troubling, but I'd like to confirm that the behavior is expected. It would appear that the indexing is different for these file system path sections than for the actual file name at the end of the path (which appears to be indexed like all the other text). Can someone confirm this? Thanks!

order nodes by dateTime

Hi, I am using BaseX 6.5 database. Say I have the documents : doc1, doc2 in my database and the first child node of these documents is "updatedTime". Say the "updatedTime" node of doc1 and doc2 have the values : 2011-02-07T14:40:00.78-05:00 and 2011-02-07T14:41:02.133-05:00 respectively. I am trying to return a sorted list of document names in the descending order of the updatedTime node. I tried the following xquery: for $doc_name in db:list() order by xs:dateTime(doc($doc_name)/updatedTime) descending return $doc_name The output I receive is [doc1, doc2]. But, the expected output is [doc2, doc1]. I tried both ascending and descending in the order by statement but I get the same output. I am not sure how the ordering of elements by dateTime works. Could you help? Thanks, Sony PS: This is a simplified version of my code. The actual nodes have namespace prefixes. I hope the solution would be consistent when namespaces are used.

Hi, Is there a way to retrieve the parent/ancestor nodes of the full-text search results of a basex database ? For instance, consider I have a document named 'feed1', 'feed2', 'feed3' in my database. A sample document ('feed1') looks as follows: <feed> <id>1</id> <updated>2011-02-07T07:10:49.588Z</updated> <title>feed1</title> <entry> <id>59</id> <title>Feed1 Root Package</title> <updated>2011-02-07T07:11:01.324Z</updated> </entry> </feed> The following xquery: for $doc_name in db:list() return (ft:extract(doc($doc_name)/feed/entry/*[text() contains text 'Root Package'])) outputs the following result as expected : <title>Feed1 Root Package</title> But, is there a way to retrieve the parent and ancestor nodes of the resulting <title> node, meaning is there a way I can output the 'id' of the entry and 'id' of the feed as well. Hallo Michael, XML-Files werden direkt in BaseX gespeichert, wenn man sie in eine DB importiert. Die Funktion file:read() hingegen greift direkt auf eine Datei im Filesystem zu. Search interface for Mailing Lists

Dear all, as has been discussed some days ago, the search for postings in our mailing lists is a tedious job: Mailman does not offer any search features, and the search engines seem to be too phlegmatic to browse the archives more frequently. To fix this, I've created the following page… http://basex.org/open-source/search/ …which allows you to search through all contents of our mailing lists. Ok, I got it figured out from this page: http://docs.basex.org/wiki/Database_%26_Collection. So, in my return concat, I need to use the "base-uri" of $song to get the actual file path. ')) Yep, that works! Sorry to bug you all with a question that's documented! Are there other options than base-uri? For instance, base-uri has the file name. Is there a function like that with just the path but not the file name? If not, I can certainly work with base-uri. (I couldn't find any, but thought I'd ask) Thanks!

this mailing list's Google search index: last (only) update around Jan 26?

Michael, I was wondering why the most recent posts don't seem to be indexed. If you pick examples from the January list , you'll probably notice that the most recent posts are from Jan. 25: [1] indexed, [2] not indexed. Maybe this is because the bot (if it ever returned after initial indexing) looked at [3] and didn't notice any change, so it didn't descend further. If this is the case and the bot returns daily or so, we should see some change soon because February is new on [3]. But I doubt that the bot ever came back after Jan 26. You could try to submit a changed sitemap.xml each month, pointing to that month's message overview page and specifying a changefreq of 'daily' [4] for that page. Don't know whether Googlebot will take this into account though. Including the "doc" information in the RETURN clause

I may be doing this completely wrong to begin with, so try not to be too shocked at my examples! ;c) My BaseX database consists of songs. They were loaded from individual XML files that are stored in a directory structure. I'm searching for songs that contain given lyrics. So far so good. I'm NOT returning XML format data, but tabular data. I'm using the "return" clause with the concat() function of XQuery to formulate each results row. For instance "song title", "author", "lyrics", etc. One row per song that is found from my search. What I'd like to be able to do is to have that results row also contain the information in the "doc" node so that in addition to selected contents of the XML file, the results row would also contain the file name and the relative directory path (which I see are in the "doc" node when I use the BaseX GUI). Here's a real-life example of a query that works well for me to return rows of elements found WITHIN the XML file: for $song in collection("OpenSongSearch") where $song/song/lyrics[ . contains text "baloche"] or $song/song/title[ . contains text "baloche"] or $song/song/author[ . contains text "baloche"] order by $song/song/title return concat($song/song/title,string('|'),$song/song/author,string('|'),replace(re place($song/song/lyrics,'\n','^line^'),'\[\w+\]',''),string('
')) The program that invokes the BaseX call parses these results to put into a listbox in a dialog. Force default file type to XML during "add to" command?

Hello- Just want to start out with KUDOS on the project, contributors, and technology. Amazing. We are importing 300K+ xml & binary files from a file system with 30k in nested hierarchical folder structures into basex. The auto-magical capabilities of basex to suck in this data (and the speed at which is does it) is kick-a%$. Question: All of the 300k+ xml files do NOT have a file extension. Is there a way to have BaseX default to xml if there is no file type? Is there perhaps some other way to handle this other than recursively renaming all the files?
