erroneous evaluation of position() on descendant axis

Hi, while playing around with BaseX, I stumbled over some weird results in conjunction with positional predicates on the descendant axis. As far as I can see, there seems to be a bug in the evaluation of function position(). Example: When I load the following XML document and evaluate the path expression /descendant::c[1], both c element nodes are returned, but only the first one is expected. Can't build using maven 3

Hi, I have checked out basex from subversion, and I could not compile it using maven 3, first it complains that the jar and compiler plugins do not have versions elements in the pom.xml. Hi all, things are moving forward again; the latest minor release of BaseX 6.3.1 contains a bunch of improved features; we've revised our APIs, and we have added improved language support to XQuery Full Text. Next, we're doing our best to improve the availability of all BaseX features, many of which are just too hidden to be noticed by everyone, and to work on the documentation. Finally, we're glad to announce that we've successfully created the infrastructure to offer commercial requests and professional support on BaseX. REST interface does not support/comply-with 'default' XForms mediatype (application/xml) for PUT, POST (and possibly others)

If I attempt to create a resource using PUT or POST using XForms Submission mechanism, it fails because by default, XForms Submissions use application/xml as content-type, but BaseX expects text/xml. BaseX actually fails the request if given application/xml! Would like BaseX to support XForms - XForms default submission mediatypes are listed at http://www.w3.org/TR/xforms11/#submit-options Thanks.

As you might have seen, it's still based on version 6.1, so it will be updated with the next official release. > 1. I'm hoping to find a step-by-step 'hello world' example for using the BaseX REST interface. To clarify, I want to be able to: 1. Start the REST service. ========================== When I start the BaseX server by doing; C:\>java -cp basex-6.3.jar org.basex.BaseXServer -s does that also start the REST service? 2. Test the rest service. ========================= How can I test if the REST service is running on localhost? Pointing a browser at http://localhost:8984/basex/jax-rx/ returns the following error; error on line 1 at column 1: Document is empty If I 'View Source' for that page in the browser, the source is just; Connection refused: connect 3. Using REST. ============== How do I create a restful interface? Say I want to create a REST API that simply does the following; An HTTP GET to locahost:8984/basex/jax-rx/foo/ returns <hello/> An HTTP GET to locahost:8984/basex/jax-rx/bar/ returns <world/> How do I build that interface? What are the steps? Are 'foo' and 'bar' collections? What's the overall structure? 4. Large updating query

Hi BaseX-ers, I'm running into an out-of-memory error when running an updating query over (almost) every document in the database. Every doc has the form <root> <entry><node3/><node2/>...</entry> <entry><node2/><node1/>...</entry> ... </root> I am reordering the elements in every <entry/> element in every document (e.g. <node1/><node2/><node3/>). The query is easy enough to write, it reorders the elements in every <entry/> and replaces the <entry/> in the document with the reordered <entry/>. It works for just one document, but as I said, the db keels over when applying the query to every document. (I am not using any doc() function by the way, just matching on the top level <root/> node.) Do you have a suggestion how I could make this work? I've looked at the documentation on the BaseX website about XQuery Update, but frankly, I do not really understand the bit about documents not being updated, I just select a node from the database, update it, works fine... I must be missing something... (the point probably ;-)). I am using the basex REST api. Huib Verweij.

Working with indices

Hi I have a bigger collection DDR-All Database Properties Name: DDR-All Size: 743 MB Nodes: 33340760 Height: 8 Database Creation Source Path: D:/var/TICEReports/JSDI data/bezne Time Stamp: 26.10.2010 02:08:30 Input Size: 542 MB Encoding: utf-8 Documents: 79313 Whitespace Chopping: ON Entity Parsing: OFF Indexes Path Summary: ON Text Index: ON Attribute Index: ON Full-Text Index: OFF When I run xquery count(//MSG) it shows result 511990, which is correct. However, it takes a lot of time to produce that result. I thought, that with existing indices it shall bring the result in seconds, and not in minutes (like 10 minutes) Note, that I have created the collection before 6.3 was released, so this might be the case and I would have to import it all again. I was trying to run xquery, using indices xquery basex:index('MSG', 'path') xquery basex:index('//MSG', 'path') but I got a feeling, I do not got it properly, as it responds "Unknown index path" What I would like to know is - names of indices available - what is basex:index function usable for and for what it is not - can I create my own indices? Like calculating date from dateTime fileds in XML. I guess it is not supported. - any further reading? Most of the description is related to full text, but this is not my case. Because BaseX was missing from the list at http://nosql-database.org/ , I took the liberty of adding it. There was a 330 char limit on the description, so I swiped some stuff from the home page and tightened it up to fit. If anyone at BaseX would prefer a different description, let me know or send it to the folks at nosql-database.org. And congrats on the latest release. Good features and reliability, Java, and the ability to use BaseX with Maven make it my XML DB of choice. Chas.

Hi Oliver, I tried both GUI mode and terminal client. I get the same error there. And also Map Visualization worked fine for the same collection before I created indexes. Don't you have the same problem in terminal mode? How big is your collection then (number of files and size in MB)? Congratulations to the hard working BaseX team for releasing BaseX 6.3. I haven't found a more powerful or useful XML database system. I know of very few open source software projects that are as attentive to problems, and as rapidly making improvements, as BaseX.

Changes done by one client reflected to others - how

Hi I see, that all queries are really living in its "within my connection" world and other clients, incl. GUI do not reflect it. Could someone explain, what exactly can be expected from that? Will other clients see mu updates after they reconnect? Can there arise some conflict? Like two clients updating the same node at the same time. These are quite important facts as it may affect way of deployment significantly (I am planning implementation, where we will handle traffic information with changes in minute by minute manner) With best regards Jan -- *Ing. Ohne funktionieren die ganzen schönen Tooltips nicht mehr richtig... query plan / basex:index usage

Dear BaseX Team, First, could you tell me how I can get only the query plan of a query, without running it ? Last, is there a way to call, in a same cross db/collection query, basex:index function on each of the dbs/collections ? Thank you for sharing your wonderful native database. Index issue for a large collection

Hi, I have a database collection with over 17000 documents (about 190MB in total). Everything worked fine until I created text and attribute indexes to improve performance. Now I cannot open database and perform any operation with it because I get 'Error: Out of Main Memory'. Setting "intparse on" doesn't help. I've increased Xmx value up to 2560m (maximum value for my system), it doesn't help too. Is there any way to fix it? Could you provide an approximate size of memory that is required for text and attribute indexes depending on the size of the database? Is there any possibility for me to use indexes on current system? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Ivan

Hi Nigel, 1. You have to run a query on the database like: for $doc in collection() let $path := base-uri($doc) return $path 2. Yes you can do that, see the following example: script test (save as test): create db test xquery insert node <root /> into doc("test") xquery doc("test")/root run the script: java -cp basex-6.2.9.jar org.basex.BaseX (or BaseXClient) < test 3. There is currently no 'reload' command...So you have to replace the file by your own. 4. You can have a look at the homepage on http://www.inf.uni-konstanz.de/dbis/basex/commands or just ask for more information. I hope i could help, dont hesitate to ask for more. Hi Nigel Just a note from what I learned about using (Python) API I tested Python and it seemed broken - server console was reporting some errors. I came back later on (after getting disappointed by Sedna XML database disk space requirements). Using latest BaseX I succeeded Starting server java -cp basex-6.2.9.jar org.basex.BaseXServer Starting client java -cp basex-6.2.9.jar org.basex.BaseXClient -n localhost -p 1984 My Python scripts are since then performing without any problem. My estimation is, the same may apply to other API, not only to Python. I think, there was some other post recommending you to use some API to get the file remotely to a database. Such a test is on my plan, I may let you know.
