BASEX and PHP: for $node in doc("factbook") -- ERROR: Unknow

Hi all! I have written some PHP Scrips with test queries to the factbook database, which are are well executed at my local machine (Windows, XAMPP, BaseX on localhost, Port 1984). Now, I have ported my examples to a remote server, and it seams that the query string is not accepted. For example: The query (for $node in doc("allbus")//(d:QuestionItem|d:MultipleQuestionItem) return data($node/@id)') results in the following error: Unknown command 'for'; try "help". Other queries result in Error: 0 instead of 1 commands received. We have BaseX Client running and the queries can be submitted through the linux console (> xquery for $node in doc("factbook")//country return $node). Opening the database and querying also works. But from my PHP scripts it does not work. Does anybody know went wrong with my installation? Godmar Back asks: I'm still curious what XML interface I'm missing. While I agree that published interfaces should work properly, I think a simple point is being completely missed. Both XML and XQuery are, by their nature, human readable text, regardless of their complexity. That means that queries can be sent simply as text strings, and results of any size can also be returned in that way and then parsed as XML fragments in any number of myriad ways, including parsing to an in-memory DOM. I successfully use this approach to query an XML database representing close to 200,000 pages of text and to retrieve pretty large XML fragments (actually documents with a single root element) quickly. This may be a simple approach but there is no loss of generality by using it - in other words, using a more complex interface will not let you do some XQuery processing that cannot be done with this approach. You can use the following code to access BaseX for example (in this case to a local server using default permissions). So you have to create a service with the basex startup on your machine and start this. Another way is to start it like this: start /B java -cp basex.jar org.basex.BaseXServer this will let you get back to the command line (with enter). But when you close the console the server is closed too. Hello, I have a collection of XML documents formated with respected to a pre-defined stable schema (WSDLs---Web service definitions). I need to execute (from PHP) search over XML documents. I wonder whether xBase: (1) scores relevance of whole matching XML documents and ranks them (in any way) ? (2) allows to identify (in matching document) XML elements with matched query terms and than navigate to parental/children nodes in XML structure ? Hi Christian, A while ago, you were soliciting feature requests so here's mine :-) It would be nice if there was some way to perform XSLT transforms on the results of a query. I'd be happy to implement this if you gave me a few pointers about where you think it would fit in the best. My guess would be to make a XSLT filter and attach it to the OutputStream that is passed to Proc.exec. I'm not sure about how to decide when to apply which stylesheets so I'm open to suggestions here. From a user point of view, I think it would be nice to have a "style" parameter on the REST interface that allows one to specify a stylesheet. Cheers, Andy

Hi Johanna, it looks as if your quoted example from the »XQuery Kick Start« books is XQuery-only, ignoring other languages such as PHP, so (I guess?) it's quite comparable to the example I proposed below. The only difference is the XQuery syntax, which has changed in the final W3 Recommendation: Old: define function func() { ... }; Final: declare function local:func() { ... }; Regarding the mix of PHP and XQuery, unfortunately, you won't be able to "import" any XQuery functions. Instead, you'll have to decide which world world you prefer – currently, they are just too different to go hand in hand. Does this come closer to your initial question? Using "define function ...."

Hi, I am relatively new to baseX and XQuery and just trying the funcionalities of BaseX. I have got some questions on the possibility of defining user-defined functions, which take a node (or a node set) as parameters and process them subsequently (e.g. format the results as an html table, or another numerical computations etc.). This might look like this: define function createTable($n as node) { for $c in $n/* return <some html-output>; } and I would like to use the defined function "createTable" in a xquery expression. For example : for $questionscheme in doc("database")//d:QuestionScheme return createTable($questionscheme/node()) That means I need to pass a whole node (not the query results as string), in order to process the node with further xquery expressions. Is this compatible with BaseX? And where should I define such functions? Defining a function through the XQuery-API does not work. The functions in class Query in the BaseXClient.php seem to only support a successive query processing (one result tuple after another). Or have I overseen something? If not, can this class be quickly modified to support this? Many thanks for your help on this!

support for EventTarget appears to be missing

Hi, the Elements returned by XQResultItem.getNode() don't appear to support the EventTarget interface: org.basex.api.dom.BXElem cannot be cast to org.w3c.dom.events.EventTarget This means we need to serialize the node to an XML string, then parse that string to obtain a org.w3c.dom.Node instance that supports this interface. This is awkward and highly inefficient. Why doesn't BaseX support EventTarget (or use the existing DOM implementation provided with Java, which does support DOM events?) - Godmar

XQST0049 error in BaseX 6.1 that did not occur in BaseX 6.0

Hi, I recently upgraded to BaseX 6.1. I now receive an error when running a query that run without complications in BaseX 6.0 The offending query has this prolog: declare namespace libx='http://libx.org/xml/libx2'; declare namespace atom='http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom'; declare variable $metadata as xs:anyAtomicType := doc('libx2_meta')/metadata; declare variable $feed as xs:anyAtomicType := doc('libx2_feed')/feed; which results in *declare variable $metadata as xs:anyAtomicType := doc('libx2_meta')/metadata;* ^ javax.xml.xquery.XQQueryException: Stopped at line 3, column 48: [XQST0049] Duplicate definition of $metadata as xs:anyAtomicType. at org.basex.api.xqj.BXQDynamicContext.execute(BXQDynamicContext.java:251) at org.basex.api.xqj.BXQPreparedExpression.executeQuery(BXQPreparedExpression.java:54) at org.libx.libappdatabase.Query.main(Query.java:100) Simply exchanging BaseX61.jar with BaseX6.jar makes this query work as expected. I note that if I switch lines 3 and 4 (so that the 'declare variable $feed' appears first), the error is flagged on this line. The query runs fine using the command-client in both BaseX 6 and 6.1 I'm using org.basex.api.xqj.BXQDataSource, following by prepareExpression, followed by executeQuery. This query has no external variables. Another point of information: out of curiosity, I printed information about the prepared expression after prepareExpression like so: System.out.println("external vars: " + Arrays.asList(pe.getAllExternalVariables())); System.out.println("unbound vars: " + Arrays.asList(pe.getAllUnboundExternalVariables())); this shows 'metadata' and 'feed' as external variables: external vars: [metadata, feed] unbound vars: [] Why are 'metadata' listed as external, even though they are not declared as such? Hi, we use BaseX in a Tomcat server on Linux. We run multiple instances of our application as different web applications in that server. A problem we encountered is that BaseX refers to the 'user.home' property when identifying the location of its .basex configuration file. This property is related to which (Linux) user started the Tomcat server, which is unrelated to the web application that needs to start a BaseX instance. We are now using a very awkward work-around: temporarily setting 'user.home' to the desired value, then touching a class in org.basex.core to force its initialization: oldUserHome = System.getProperty("user.home"); System.setProperty("user.home", basexdir); if (!org.basex.core.Prop.HOME.startsWith(basexdir)) throw new java.lang.Error("BaseX property initialization failed"); System.setProperty("user.home", oldUserHome); Could a programmatic way to initialize BaseX be provided that does depend on system properties? I understand that it will require a small amount of refactoring (given how deep this assumption is wired into the code), but it is absolutely necessary to facilitate the use of BaseX in shared environments such as Tomcat. Hi All, The startjaxrx script doesn't add all the necessary jars to the classpath before starting BaseX. Dear Nigel, line and column information is omitted in error messages returned by the server. One solution to get more feedback is to use the BaseX API or the command line of BaseX, or to directly test your query in the BaseX GUI Editor. Your request is a good hint, though; we might add extended server feedback in the next minor release. PHP: How can I get the name of the xquery function where an error occurred?

If I get an error message like this: [XPST0003] Incomplete 'let' expression. How can I find out more information regarding the error eg. the name of the function that failed? The error message doesn't give any clue about where the error occurred. I'm using PHP. Hi all, I was testing the PHP examples on your website ( https://svn.uni-konstanz.de/dbis/basex/trunk/api/etc/php/ ), but I get the following results after executing the QueryExample.php (the query string is: $input = "for $i in 1 to 10 return <xml>Text { $i }</xml>";): This is the output: "instead of 1 commands received." The basex server is running, the access to the server seems to work. I can type the query in the basex-api and it works! Through PHP no query is executed and no results are returned. Can someone help me? Have I overseen something? Should I specify the database (e.g. factbook.xml, and how?)?

Hi, I wonder if the full-text index is also available to attribute nodes: XQuery-Expression: for $i in //*:identifier[contains(@*:value,'nc1n2[C@H]')] return $i Query executed in 4106.57 ms. I also tried: for $i in //*:identifier[@*:value contains text 'nc1n2[C@H]'] return $i Query executed in 22350.34 ms. Adding xml to an embedded database collection

Note: I am working in Scala. I want to be able to create new XML documents based on input from a Web-based form, then add them to a Collection in an embedded instance of BaseX programmatically. So if I have a collection called "Persons" and XML in memory thus: <person id="df802f63-f5b9-4b28-951e-aa2c8d7220dd"> <name>Chas</name> <gender>Male</gender> </person> (or as a String, if that's necessary -- Scala allows inline XML). I want this db stored not in my home directory, but in WEB-INF/db. So how do I use CreateDB(input, name) to create the db where I want it? What do I provide for the input? Must I have an XML file already? What is the relationship between that file and the DB, and how does this differ from a collection? Can anyone point me to a spot in the documentation where this is covered? All I can find are examples and they are confusing to me. Once I have a DB open (and maybe a collection), I want to add an XML document directly from code, thus: val xml = <person><name>Chas</name></person> or maybe val xml = "<person><name>Chas</name></person>" then Add(xml).execute(context) I've tried this but the XML disappears. How do I put this in the correct DB and collection? It seems pretty straightforward to use the console or the GUI, but the documentation on embedded use is pretty sparse. Is anyone else using BaseX in embedded mode? Is there documentation somewhere (or more examples) that I've missed? Thanks. I am thinking about using BaseX for persistence by converting objects to/from XML using XStream: http://xstream.codehaus.org/index.html Should be interesting. TIA, Chas.
