I'm having fun with RESTXQ, this is an easy and efficient way to create REST interfaces once you learn how. Two questions: 1. How do I return a forest of elements? Multi-part MIME types? If so, how do I specify that? What do I need to add to this particular declaration? (:~ Look up all entries in the Abbott-Smith lexicon that contain an English word in the gloss. :) declare %rest:path("/api/abbott-smith/gloss/{$g}") %rest:GET %output:method('xml') function as:gloss($g) { $as:abbott-smith/*:entry[.//*:gloss[contains-token(lower-case(.), lower-case($g))] ] }; 2. For flexibility you may wish to consider using a golang proxy/edge router. Also useful for https / acme. There is a solution using traefik here: https://imandrea.me/blog/traefik-custom-404/ This seems to use traefik.http.routers.error-router. Adam

Wrong MIME type ...

Using RESTXQ in an application for the first time. Hi, Allthough I have never had any feedback on my R-client to BaseX, I have steadily been working on a new version (even while being retired, I still like to program :-). At present all tests are passed, except one test on adding content to a database. On my Linux-machine 'url exists("https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BaseXdb/basex/master/basex-api/src/test/r…")' returns TRUE and 'first.xml' is added to a database. When executed on a Windows machine, the same test returns FALSE. I have tested other URL's - starting with https or http - and they are all accepted. Any clue why "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BaseXdb/basex/master/basex-api/src/test/r…" is blocked? Ben

Maybe related to the HTTP header field x-content-type-options: nosniff https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/internet-explore… What is the tool/library you are using on Windows? Is it an R HTTP client that is interfacing some Windows DLL? Maybe they put this rejection in the DLL. items of type map(*) cannot be serialized

I want to serialize JSON. Consider the following function: declare function local:index() { array{ $levinsohn/levinsohn/feature/header ! map {./name : ./description ! string() } } }; When I run that, I get output that looks like this: [map { "Ambiguous": "Marked but ambiguous constituent order." }, map { "annotations": "Inline annotations." } !!! SNIP !!!] That won't work as output in a REST API, so I want to serialize that without the map keyword. I tried to use fn:serialize(): declare function local:index() { array{ $levinsohn/levinsohn/feature/header ! map {./name : ./description ! string() } } ! serialize(.) }; That gave me this error: items of type map(*) cannot be serialized So ... what's the right way to do this? Running dba as a web app .... what am I doing wrong?

I am confused about what is required for running a web app. Here's what I have tried so far: 1. Running basexhttp from ./Downloads/basex If I download the .zip file from https://basex.org/download/ and run basexhttp from the /Downloads/basex subdirectory, I can see the "BaseX HTTP Services" page at localhost:8984, but when I look at localhost:8984/rest, I see no databases: <rest:databases resources="0"/> 2. Running basexhttp from a random directory If I run basexhttp from a random or empty directory, localhost:8984 returns this message: Service not found. But localhost:8984/rest lists all of my databases. 3. Running basexhttp using a copy of ./Downloads/basex/webapp I created a ./basex directory in a temporary directory and did this: cp -r /Users/xxx/Downloads/basex/webapp . I then tried running basexhttp from the new ./basex directory I created in the temporary directory. The results were the same as running from a random directory. Running from within the webapp directory does not work in either case. What am I doing wrong? Thanks! Jonathan

Passing options to saxon through xslt:transform

Hello -- Somewhat to my surprise I've got the large XSLT 3.0 transform to load, or at least not complain about includes. (Load the input as a db; load the stylesheet from the file system. Be extra-careful about constructing URIs.) Which raises the prospect that I'll actually be able to run this transform from BaseX, but I cannot figure out how to set a value for the initial template. This query: let $source := <dummy></dummy> let $template := <xsl:stylesheet version="3.0" xmlns:xsl=' http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform'> <xsl:template name="xsl:initial-template"> <thingy>Hello, World!</thingy> </xsl:template> <xsl:template match="/"> <fail>matched on root</fail> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> return xslt:transform($source,$template,map{'initial-template': '{ http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform}initial-template'}) returns <fail>matched on root</fail> Which isn't surprising; setting initial-template is a Saxon option, not a parameter. If I try return xslt:transform($source,$template,map{},map{'initial-template': '{ http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform}initial-template'}) I get [XPTY0004] Unknown option 'initial-template'. Content-Encoding: gzip on incoming RESTXQ POST

Hello, I have a RESTXQ function that receives an XML file via HTTP POST. This works perfectly. The client would now like to compress the data with gzip and set the Content-Encoding: gzip header. I set GZIP = true in my .basex file based on the documentation [1] But these gzipped post requests fail - my function is called but content seems to arrive at my function still compressed. (Responses from the server become compressed dynamically as expected - and that works great). Is there something else I need to do to make it work for requests? specifying the processor for xslt:transform()

Hello! I can get xslt:transform() to pick up a licensed saxon if I go into the appropriate script (basexgui, etc.) and add it to the class path there. (but not, oddly, from the environment class path on Linux.) That's going to be annoying as BaseX updates with laudable frequency. Is there some way, particularly in the context of a BXS file or as an option to xslt:transform(), to set which transformer I want to use? I'm hoping to be able to build testing against various transformers so being able to set a specific one on a per-query or per-BXS-environment basis would be extremely helpful. Thanks! Graydon

json serialization : how to ignore new lines and tabs ?

And we would like to ignore the namespace attributes as well. Dear BaseX people, probably a blackout of mine, but I do not understand the following behaviour. Query: declare context item external := '#none'; . Hello, I’m seeing a lot of exceptions written to the console when I add a document that has an attribute value that is a date. I can’t quite work out exactly what format causes BaseX to think it might be a number. It appears that the index is still created/updated correctly so the exception might be cosmetic. base-uri throws exception

Hi, importing archives using the GUI containing files with certain characters (e.g. []) leads to exception requesting the base-uri later on. For example importing a archive containing 'files/[Content_Types].xml' file (which is a valid file name) can be imported and results in the mentioned uri which is not valid and will result in an exception using base-uri for nodes contained in the corresponding instance. Better mask the non allowed chars while importing instead of creating invalid uris. Alex

Hi, Excel files not treated as archives comparable to MS-Word / MS-PowerPoint or idml Files (Indesign related) while importing using GUI. The later 3 are treated as (zip) archives and content is added. This is very handy for certain data analytics tasks. Would be nice if .xslx files treated the same as docx, pptx, etc. Might be a low hanging fruit? Best regards, Alex

I have a command file that configures a database, throwing a bunch of sources into various paths. I have a set of TSV files. I want to do the equivalent of ADD TO, pointing to a directory of TSV files, so that they are parsed and converted to XML and placed in the appropriate path. How do I do that? Jonathan

Hello -- Using BaseX 9.6.1 on Linux. So I'm trying to convert a compact-ish element pattern string, delimited with braces, back into something that looks like XML vocabulary for readability. (The pattern strings are being used to detect similar structure in the content set.) The test query (below) works fine. Stick the functions in a module namespace, and run the real content, and I get the "Stack Overflow: Try tail recursion?" error. (Query plan for this case attached.) If I have a query in the GUI (9.6.1) which declares an external variable: declare variable $targetMap external; and set the value via the GUI $x button to: map {'structure' : '/some/path/name'} It doesn't work. Typing the variable as map(*) doesn't work. declare variable $targets external; declare variable $targetMap as map(*) := xquery:eval($targets); does work, but makes me think I must be doing something wrong. How does one go about binding a literal map to an external variable? (I am going to want to do this in a script later; the GUI version is strictly for testing.) Thanks! Graydon

Problems installing EXPath

I tried installing EXPath, but without success. > REPO INSTALL http://files.basex.org/modules/expath/functx-1.0.xar Stopped at , 1/66: [repo:parse] functx-1.0.xar: Resource "expath-pkg.xml" not found.. Custom map combinator

Dear all, just thinking out loudly ... Whether it could be interesting to specify a function with proper signature as a custom combinator for map:merge. Currently "duplicates" : "combine" results in the entry value being a sequence of the originating values. This could cause loss of information in the case that one of the merged maps does not contain the key. It could be useful to use defaults or placeholders instead ... Maybe even combine the values as strings or numbers .... Too exotic? M.
