Position of attributes using copy/modify

Hi, I know that the order of attributes in XML is not relevant, but I am wondering whether there is a way to add an attribute as the last one using copy/modify expression. The “as last” option seems not to work for attributes. Cheers, Giuseppe

Handling saving errors

Hello BaseX team, We're developing an application where a command can result in saving data on multiple xml documents in the same database. We're using Rest APIs. Now, We're looking on handling saving errors. For example, if there were an error in saving data on a one document, then the saving of data on other documents must be canceled (even if there were successful updates, they must be canceled). Hello, I have a Java web application which relies on BaseX library to mostly read XML files (they are quite big, e.g: 20 MB per file) by XQuery. The XQuery is also quite complicated. It takes ~3 seconds to query. Configuration file .basex: https://pastebin.com/3EH7MJi5 I got the error below when multiple requests are processed in parallel. I wonder how BaseX can work in this case without error like this? RbaseX Client software, reading from a socket

Hi, I have no idea if it is used by others, but last march my most recent version of my RbaseX library was accepted by CRAN. To my knowledge there are no errors (all tests are passed). The only problem is that performance is bad ;-(. Uploading a file or downloading the result from a query can take several minutes. I can understand why it takes so long. According to the server protocol, the end of a stream is indicated by a terminating 0-byte. And to distinguish a 'regular' 0-byte in a binary stream from the stop-0, 0-bytes (and FF-bytes) are preceded by an extra FF-byte. The only way to deal in R with these FF-byte was to proces each character/byte separately and that takes much time. I am trying to speed up everything by using C++ for all direct read/write operations. But I never have worked with C++ before. And neither do I understand exactly how streams are to be used. According to some posts on internet, when reading from a stream the first 8 bytes are used to pass information on the length of the stream. My question is if this a standard way to pass information on that length? Or is it specific to C++ or Java? Ben

How to serialize HTML as text

Hi, I’ve got an XQuery question more than a BaseX question. I need to output a JSON object with HTML content without a parent element. Weird idea I grant you, but required by the people I work with. Working from a map, in the map value, the content should not appear in a parent element. Instead of : ``` map { ‘key' : ‘value’, ‘content’ : <span>this is some <hi>content</hi> etc</span> } ``` I would like to output something like ``` map { ‘key' : ‘value’, ‘content’ : 'this is some <hi>content</hi> etc' } ``` Is there a way to output some HTML content without the parent element in XQuery ? If you want to ensure that arguments of user-defined functions are not evaluated before the function is evaluated, you should work with function items: let $check := function( $pred as item(), $true as function() as item()*, $false as function() as item()* ) { if ($pred) then $true() else $false() } return $check(true(), true#0, function() { error((), 'false') }) In the specific case you brought up, you can instead call the built-in function util:if: util:if(true(), 'true', error((), 'false')) The third argument will only be considered if the supplied condition fails. I have recommended BaseX to some people who are writing an application. The developers, who are more comfortable with SQL, have asked for a list of websites that use BaseX. I imagine they would be happy with other happy customers too, they want to have basic confidence in the tool. So which users should give people confidence that BaseX is the tool for them? Hi, How do I rename all the "record" nodes in a database? I'm trying: for $x in db:open("bccdc_covid19") return return rename node $x//record as "baz" but this gives back Stopped at ., 1/13: [XPDY0002] bc.rename.xq: no context value bound. or [XPST0003] Unexpected end of query: 'rename node $x/...'. depending whether it's run from within the basex console. thanks, Nick

sum() is returning inaccurate sums

Hi all, I'm building a budgeting system for home use, using XSLTForms and -- ready for it? -- BaseX! sum() has been behaving weird. I'm adding USD, which means only 2 decimals of precision. But depending on the combination of elements I add, I'll get a long double that's inaccurate. Sometimes it returns what I expect, sometimes it doesn't, but either case is repeatable. I did find one other thread in the mailing list about this, it got an answer but didn't really explain much. I have a schema for prices in the XForm, should I be loading that somehow? The only workaround I have now is like, "let $grosses:= for $gross in $receipts//gross return xs:decimal($gross)" but I'm hoping there's a more straightforward way. Hi, I would like to print a comment containing only a dash (i.e., ) , but this is not allowed. I tried to use "-" instead of - in comment { "-” }, but such a string is converted to ‘-', so the error is still there. How can I print  ? Should I simply use <----->? In any case, I see that data() does not convert - into -: how can I get the conversion? Thanks. Best, Giuseppe

RestXQ and Docker

Dear list, I'm using BaseX in a Docker container and I am able to add XML-Files to Databases. But I am not allowed to edit 'restxq.xqm' or to add something to the '/webapp' directory. Changing permissions with 'chown -R 1984 ~/webapp/' via bash doesn't work. What do I need to do, to be able to use my own restxq-module within the docker container of basex? S1000D XML Database

I am completely new to basex so forgive me please for asking something that has been asked before. Can anyone share any knowledge about the use of basex to manage S1000D XML content? Specifically, I'm interested in it's use as an offline xml database manager for a large collection of S1000D data modules: 100k or more perhaps 5GB of data uncompressed. GUI Stack Trace

Hi Folks, I got this error trying to specify a directory location when creating a database using the GUI by dialog. Creating the database via command works. I feel like this is somehow not the fault of BaseX because I don't see this on my other Linux machine. Nonetheless, I'd like recommendations on how the Linux side of the basex community works. Serializing with xml-stylesheet prolog

Hi, Been a while since I've posted. Been a while since I programmed! I need to run a client-side stylesheet (XSLTForms, I tried it server side, didn't work), but getting my assembled XHTML document to output with <?xml-stylesheet ...?> has been hard. After searching https://docs.basex.org/wiki/Serialization, http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt-xquery-serialization-31/#serparams-in-xdm-instance, searching this list, lots of googling with prolog/declaration/other words, I came up empty. So I tried other things. But those other things worked poorly, and when things did come out in the right order, with the right namespaces etc, the single page app that worked as a standalone document, doesn't work. If I copy and paste raw output from basex that my browser receives, put it in a new file in the same directory, and open that in my browser it works fine. So there's gotta be some issue with my workaround. So I'm hoping you can tell me what I've missed in my searches, so that I don't need a workaround :-) I haven't built anything in a few years, but I've been subscribed to this list for many many years and you're all such a patient, wonderful lot. We have a BaseX application that uses the BaseX REST API. A number of GET requests are failing with an HTTP 400 Bad Request response. Hi all BaseX users, When I search for 'YET_ANOTHER_SILLY_KEYWORD', ft:search gives me all text nodes containing any of the YET ANOTHER SILLY KEYWORD words. I tried the different search modes, but could not find a way to get ft:search return only the text nodes containing the concatenation. Does anybody have a solution ? HashMap insertion bug - node ID is different on get than on put

This can be reproduced in 9.2.4 and 9.3.3 (only tried those 2 versions) We are using java:HashMap, and we are seeing that when we insert a node into the HashMap from a file and do a subsequent hash:get, the generate-id() for the hash:get is different than the original generate-id value from the hash:put. Note: when we read the XML from a file, that is when we see the issue, if we declare the XML in Basex GUI, we do NOT see this behavior. Random Numbers from Random.org

Hello I try to use random numbers from random.org. Here my xpath let $urand := function(){doc("https://www.random.org/integers/?num=1&min=0&max=1000000000&col…")//*:pre/number() div 1000000000} return for $i in 1 to 10 return $urand() Which brings 10 time the same value, however, every run time a different one. Indexes getting removed after update operation in database

Hi, I am using Basex version 8.6.6 i am creating full text indexes on database from the GUI, when any update operation is happening on the database all created indexes getting removed. when i use ft module to search anything then error occurs that database "test" has not full text index. I am expecting if index already created then it should not removed, please suggest how can i resolve this issue. Regards Dharmendra Kumar Singh

Eclipse editor support and authentication

Hi Folks, Perhaps I'm using too new of an Eclipse (Photon), but I'm not able to integrate Eclipse with BaseX. I installed the trial Oxygen plugin, though I don't want to pay for it. Even then, it would not offer a BaseX datasource, only one for ExistDB. I tried to install XQDT, but it could not be installed without downgrading many components, which I did not want to do. As an Eclipse person, using IntelliJ would not be very productive as I've gotten used to the Eclipse keyboard shortcuts. I'd like to create a server program based in BaseX with RESTful xquery based services. Initially, it would be a CRUD type application. It doesn't need high performance, just not terrible, and I'd like to be able to authenticate into it. I'm confident BaseX can handle the task, it's just getting an editor capable of handling it. Using the GUI that comes with BaseX is good for small tasks, but not so good for larger applications. It doesn't appear that there's much in the way of XQuery support in Eclipse anymore, and even the XQDT if it could be installed doesn't support the newer 3.1 type xquery (I believe I read). Can someone recommend a good editor? I'm using GVim for many small projects, though it takes work to get it to work with larger projects efficiently (CTags helps for C/C++ code, but I dont' think it works with XQuery). Separately, would it be possible to develop a secure BaseX based application that users could log in, and authenticate into, store delicate personal information and have it be sufficiently secure? Could it be at least as secure as, say a Tomcat application? Sorry to ask this question, I do app development, but usually my role comes in after the user has been authenticated using something like OAuth or other. RESTXQ - java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

Hi BaseX team! A quick question. Is there some known bug/common setting missing for RESTXQ and memory problems? I have this simple module ( into /webapp, a .xqm file ) : *module namespace exe = 'http://site.com/execute <http://site.com/execute>';* *declare * *%updating* * %rest:path("update")* * %rest:consumes("application/x-www-form-urlencoded")* * %rest:POST function exe:update() {* * xquery:eval-update(request:parameter("query"))* *};* I use it to execute some updates against some databases from different clients. Everything works fine by a while, but after some time I get this error [1]: *java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space* I noticed that every call to *update()* the memory grows and grows until it reaches the *OutOfMemoryError*. [2] If I stop the HTTP server, the memory is released immediately. [3] What I'm doing wrong? Is there some command to execute the GC? Is this a problem with "*xquery:eval-update()"*?
