Hello, i am getting an BaseXException when trying to get large amount of data from a XML-resource with a JAVA-Client. For example for a xml-file with the size of 79167874 ("FACTOR", as shown by the web-gui) "session.execute(new XQuery("doc('db/file.xml')"));" will result in an exception[0]. My assumption is that a timeout is exceeded somewhere.. so my next question is how to properly set the timeout (Or in general, how to run specific commands via java-client, I can't find it in the wiki. "session.query("timeout[0]");" seems to not have any influence. Query large files in general, for example query its number of instances, seems to not be the problem. Increasing the -Xmx in the basex-script did not help. # Options for virtual machine (can be extended by global options) BASEX_JVM="-Xmx10G $BASEX_JVM" Increasing the -Xmx of the java-application did not help as well. Hi Bhushan (cc to the list), So you are exclusively working with binary resources, right? Folder operations in BaseX

Hi All, Hope everyone is doing good. I am currently trying to copy an entire folder from the source location to a destination location. I have tried rename but its too expensive from time response stand point when the schema size is too large. To go around the problem I am trying to run the xquery using db:store (). But db:store doesn’t seem to work on folders. So I am wondering if there is any other efficient way ( apart from rename and db:store) which will work on the folder. I need to copy the entire folder from source location to destination and it may have a hierarchy of sub-folders in it. Any help on that is really appreciated! Thanks, Bhushan

DFDL module and XSLT module

Hello all. I am making a simple wrapper java module for Daffodil so that I can run DFDL parsing and unparsing from XQuery. I got communication working between BaseX and my module allready, but I can only send and return Strings. Because the module is so similar to the XSLT module of BaseX, I wonder if the java source code is available. I can't find it in the GitHub repository. Thanks Kristian K

Update facility

I have written a function consisting in a copy/modify expression: declare function local:mine($s) { copy $e:= $s modify (...) return $e }; It seems it is not possible to somehow make it recursive ( ... return local:mine($e) ): can anyone confirm this? Hi all A quick update. The issue was indeed caused by our firewall. Hereby the problem is solved. Thank you for the quick response Christian! Whatever happened to EVENTPORT? [urgent]

Good evening all I'm sorry to be so pushy with the urgent addendum but we have an event and some demos coming up and we only now realise that BaseX isn't working anymore. (Our own fault.) We upgraded from BaseX 7.9 to 8.3 (after going from Cent OS 6 to Cent OS 7). Thinking we could use the same settings from our .basex configuration file, I ran the command basexserver as I used to. This works, but I remember seeing a message in the command line that some attributes were not recognised and that a new configuration file was created by basex itself, and that a server was launched subsequently. The issue is, though, that we use BaseX as a back-end database system that processes requests from an apache webservice. On Machine A the webservice is running, and basex is running on machine B. The webservice fires a session request (with PHP) like so: $session = new Session("machineB", 1958, "admin", "admin"); However, the connection fails. First a warning, followed by a Fatal error. PHP Warning: socket_connect(): unable to connect [113]: No route to host in basex-client.php on line 17 Line 17 would be the first one of this clause: if(!socket_connect($this->socket, $h, $p)) { throw new Exception("Can't communicate with server."); } My instinct was that the webservice could not connect to basex because some settings in the newly created .basex file were incorrect. Cannot access basex instance with latest basex/dba image

Hey everybody, I have a basex/basexhttp:8.5.1 production container running. To access the dba web interface I created a basex/dba container and connected it to the same docker network. On the <http://host:18984/dba/login> http://host:18984/dba/login was an input box to connect to a remote BaseX server instance but with the latest basex/dba: image (8.6.1 beta) this is gone How am I now supposed to access the dba web ui ? Hi All, Because it got rejected sending this email again. [Sriram] We have an application where we need to process huge XML(300-500 XML document per day -of 15-20GB) documents need to be inserted and updated by more than 200 people. Can we use Basex for this purpose. Here is the application requirement. 1. We get 300-500 xml documents everyday 2. It should be saved in Basex server 3. Every day around 200 users would edit those document using front end application created using ASP.Net. At a time maximum 75 people edit those xml documents. I could able to insert the 3Gb of XML data in to Basex server without any issue. Which is good. I am looking for logging feature when these XML documents were edited by different users. Is this feature available in Basex Server. Is Basex is suitable for content management application? Appreciate your help this regard. Upload XML File to Remote Basex Server with database module

Good Afternoon, I'm developing an interface, written in Delphi 10.1 Berlin, to a remote Basex Server, using HTTP-Server For uploading, I use the db:add query. The problem is, that I cannot upload a file, which is stored on a local path of my computer. If this file is stored on a network resource, uploading is not a problem. If I transfer the file content into a string and send this string via the above query, I got error 413 (Request entity too large) How can I solve this problem. Best regards Detlef Schmitz

Hi BaseX community, I'm wondering whether there is the possibility to keep some kind of in-memory state among successive RestXQ invocations. I know I could use the session object but this comes at the risk of loosing the state at session expiration. I could of course use a DB but with this solution I'm not sure that paying the overhead of accessing a database is worth for the small checks I need to perform. I was thinking of using Java and create some sort of singleton but this would introduce an unnecessary dependency from a custom jar. Maybe with the Jobs module? Any other clue? Thanks, Marco.

Adding a JAR to BaseX

Hello! When using BaseX on a server, I only need to add JAR files to the bin/ folder. But can someone point me where I should put the JAR files when I want to reach them from the BaseX GUI. I use the rpm packaged for Fedora 22. I have limited internet access currently ... that's the reason why I can't use my usual work-flow on this. Thanks, Kristian K

Hi Christian, For my recursive sequencer ( as I call it) I would like to have something like a 'hof:self()'-function. This "hof:self()"-function would return the (declared) function where it is used in. I have several functions that call another function with itself as one of the parameters: For instance: Declare function A( $p1) { X( $p1, ., A#1) } ; Declare function B( $p1, $p2) { X( $p1, ., B#2) } ; It would be nice if there was something like a "hof:self()"-function so that I could make these functions more generic. For instance: Declare function A( $p1) { X( $p1, ., hof:self()) } ; Declare function B( $p1) { X( $p1, ., hof:self()) } ; Is it something that would enrich the hof-module ? Like to hear from you. Change XSLT processor in GUI?

Hello everyone, Is it possible to change the XSLT processor in the GUI, either from a menu option or as an argument to xslt:transform() or in some other nifty way that I haven't been able to figure out on my own? xslt:version() returns 1.0, but I need it to use 2.0, i.e. I want to invoke Saxon. I've looked through the documentation, but all I can find is instructions on how to do this in standalone mode by adding the jar file to the classpath. XQuery performance degradation as number of json files grows

The performance of XQuery updates degrades as the number of JSON resources in my BaseX instance grows. In what ways might the number of JSON resources affect the performance of an XQuery update for a particular XML resource? I was under the impression that JSON resource were not indexed. (Note: this particular performance degradation is most dramatic when the BaseX server points to an NFS mount for the BaseX database.) Thanks, Joe

Is it possible to use indices in sub-queries

Hello everyone I’ve recently started to use and stumbled upon a problem with the indices in basex that I do not fully understand and was hoping for some clarification. So basically I’ve got a bunch of xml files in my database with medical ICD-10 codes that all look like this: <classification name=„some-name“ year=„2017“ > <code> <value>03R80JZ</value> <final>true</final> </code> <code> <value>2W3JX1Z</value> <final>false</final> </code> … ... </classification> The db can contain multiple of these files, one for each name and year, and each classification can contain up to 100k of those codes (all values are unique). What I’d like to do now is, given a list of codes, check if those codes actually exist in the classification for a given name and source. So I came up with this straight-forward piece of code: let $proc := ('F0723EZ','0JWS37Z','0W054JZ','0NQ00ZZ','03R80JZ','0PW537Z','0RW940Z','0PPD0KZ','2W3JX1Z','0D9B8ZZ','0SWC30Z','0PRJ4KZ','025R0ZZ','0T1347C','0S950ZX','008J4ZZ','0D110K4','0XUV4JZ','0GTN4ZZ','4A133J1’) for $p in $proc return /classification[@name=‚some-name‘ and @year=2017]/code[value = $p] This does work fine, however it takes roughly one second to evaluate the query, and in the Query Info Window I can see that the text index of the db is not being used. However I do see that the attribute index is being queried. Now I noticed that, if I drop the attribute index, the query is evaluated basically instantaneous and can see that the query is rewritten to use the text index as well. So my question is: Is this normal, i.e. is it not possible to use multiple indices in one query at once? Or is this a problem where the „sub-query“ …./code[value = $p] is only evaluated on the result of the first query, thus the text index is not being considered? If so, is there a way (without rewriting the whole query) to make basex use both indices when compiling the query? Thanks a lot already and all the best Clemens Müthing

Whitespace

Hi, I have a problem with whitespace handling of the default BaseX XML parser. If I have: <s>and <a>this</a> is</s> the parser deletes the spaces after "and" and before "is". Why not preserving the space as default option here? This kind of space is very important. I know that with adding xml:space I can solve the problem, but this is not easy to do automatically (moreover I cannot do this with copy/modify because all spaces are deleted after adding xm:space ). Is there a parameter which forces the parser to keep the spaces, without modifying the file? And in general, can the behavior of the parser be changed?

Hi, I have a structure like this: <c> <a>red</a> <a>red</a> <a>blue</a> <a>green</a> <a>green</a> </c> And I would like to get: <c> <a n="1">red</a> <a n="2">red</a> <a n="1">blue</a> <a n="1">green</a> <a n="2">green</a> </c> I have tried with two for loops after having identified the distinct-values(). This is in principle correct but it takes too long (I have many distinct values and a elements), because I cannot exit the for loop as soon as I get a match. I have been able to get the result with the window clause and then counting the elements of the window with a nested for-loop: is there an alternative solution? Thanks. Joseph

Importing XML using Java Classes vs Direct Commands

Hello there, I am attempting to create a database and add a resource to it programatically in Java. I have checked my data for the byte order mark, and have the ensure it is enoced using UTF-8. Help! Shaun

Any consideration given to something like XLP?

Hello, I have been giving some thought to concurrency and rollback/recovery as we continue to evolve our Java EE application that uses BaseX as its XQuery, (XQuery update facility) engine. >From reading the BaseX Transactions section I concluded that BaseX locking is done at the database level. I can imagine this could ultimately become the major bottleneck in a "reactive cloud" application, has anyone considered the value of implementing a more granular locking mechanism like XLP (Xpath Locking Protocol) on which several academic papers have been written? Are there any similar ideas on the horizon for transactional commit/rollback for XML data? Thanks to the group (and Christian in particular) for such great help, advice and support. Mike.
