James, you are right, OPTIMIZE ALL solves the problem. The txt.basex was growing at each replace, other files staying almost identical. Thanks a lot ! Hi Dirk, attached a simple test-case to reproduce the problem. data.xml is a file that contains attributes and text. Each time you run run.sh, data.xml is re-created, with current-dateTime() in. So each time, the file content is changed. The file size does not change (date format ensures it). reload.bxs deletes the file from the collection and add it back to the collection. run.sh displays the size of files in the collection. Each time you start run.sh, file size grows. You need to modify run.sh to set the correct directories locations. You have to add saxon9he.jar to run it. Marc, Are you using the updatable index? UPDINDEX true. If so, if you look back through the list Christian and I had an exchange on this as I was experiencing an ever growing index - a replace always appended to the end of the index. IIRC the logic is a bit better now in that if on a replace there is enough room in the index structure to reuse slots it will, but if not it will be appended. And the db will reuse empty slots while the database remains open. I can’t remember which is the first version where this change was made, sorry. I had a DB the other day that had got to 14GB but was only around 600MB once I did a full optimise. My suggestion is next time to try a full optimise instead of dropping the collection and see if that helps. Basex 8.2.3 data not shown, until OS restart

Hello, This is something very weird. I import bunch of XML files, into this latest version of based using Java API. When trying to access this data (via basex command line client or REST), doesn't show any databases at all. These databases shows up only after restarting OS. Is this a known issues ? or just me ? - Mansi

Finding document based on filename

Hello, I would be having 100s of databases, with each database having 100 XML documents. I want to devise an algorithm, where given a part of XML file name, i want to know which database(s) contains it, or null if document is not currently present in any database. Based on that, add current document into the database. This is to always maintain latest version of a document in DB, and remove the older version, while adding newer version. So far, only way I could come up with is: for $db in all-databases: open $db $fileNames = list $db for eachFileName in $fileNames: if $eachFileName.contains(sub-xml filename): add to ret-list-db return ret-list-db Above algorithm, seems highly inefficient, Is there any indexing, which can be done ? Do you suggest, for each document insert, I should maintain a separate XML document, which lists each file inserted etc. Once, i get hold of above list of db, I would be eventually deleting that file and inserting a latest version of that file(which would have same sub-xml file name). So, constant updating of this external document also seems painful (Map be ?). Also, would it be faster, using XQUERY script files, thru java code, or using Java API for such operations ? How do you all deal with such operations ? - Mansi

Selective indexes

Hi Dirk, I didn't want to hijack the other thread, so I started a new one :) I've read https://github.com/BaseXdb/basex/issues/59 and I think it's great!. I have a slightly different request though that I was holding back because I didn't want to sound abusive, but now that you brought it up... I might be mistaken as I haven't really debugged the code, but I believe that indexing could maybe take so long (for our use case anyway) because it indexes all the values in the xml documents. So I wonder whether it would be beneficial for the indexing speed to be able to state which specific fields to index instead of all of them. This would allow for having fast regularly used queries, without impacting insertions that much. I can explain our use case quickly: we store XML files that are interchanged with third parties. We have lots of them all the time, so insertion speed is critical. Query speed on the other hand is not critical, though obviously having fast queries is a lot better than having slow ones. But it becomes more important as the queries lock the db for writing too, aside from feeling "if I just could index this one field", hehe. If we could just index the fields that we run most of our queries against, it would be perfect. Right now, I think we can get away with organizing resources inside directories and that would be enough as that seems to work perfectly (we'll perform a couple more tests with high volume), but I thought it would be really cool if we could have a similar insertion speed to what's achieved without indexing, by just indexing some fields (again, *guessing* that the cause of the decrease in speed is due to indexing all fields in the documents, which may or may not be the case). Hi everybody, I know, that this issue has been discussed already, but I still have problems concerning BaseX and MySQL: Of course I read the documentation: I downloaded the Connector/J from the MySQL website and put the .jar file (mysql-connector-java-5.1.36-bin.jar) into the basex/lib folder. I closed and restarted the GUI and tried the following: import module namespace sql="http://basex.org/modules/sql"; sql:init("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver") I receive the following error message: [bxerr:BXSQ0007] Could not initialize supplied driver: 'com.mysql.jdbc.Driver' Is there something obvious I'm missing? Sorry, I realized I hadn't post this to the mailing list. Hi Martin, I've just finished my test. It was a million resources in 5:31:20 hours, average of around 50 resources per second, I don't see any errors int the log. I wasn't able to get more speed as my client VM can't handle it. The only drawback I see is that when I get the list of dbs through the rest interface, the number of resources for my db is not updated until the sessions are closed. I can get the resources with no problem though. This test is perhaps similar to yours. Decode a RESTXQ path

Hello! I have a simplistic search path as %rest:GET %rest:path("search/{$query}") for an application. It all works fine with ASCII query string, but I can't figure out how to decode the string when It contains utf-8 characters. Best wishes Kristian K

non-ascii collection names over WebDAV?

Hi there, does BaseX support the creation of collections containing non-ascii (uft8-encoded) characters? In my case we have a functionality to import a ZIP file into BaseX or Exist-DB over WebDAV. File names and directory names must be preserved. BaseX seems to normalize names to ascii. Any way to change this? Andreas

Installation of RESTXQ scripts over HTTP API?

Hi there, I know that .xqm script are installed directly on the filesystem (compared to Exist where the scripts are stored directly within the database). Is there some way to install RESTXQ through some (HTTP) API on the filesystem? Background of my question: I want to deploy RESTXQ script to a pre-installed BaseX server where I not necessarily have access to over HTTP. In Exist-DB I can directly upload the scripts over WebDAV (which is very convenient) ...now looking into a similar option in order for BaseX in order keep the deployment of applications as easy as possible ("one click" installation). Hi, I'm using the BaseXClient.cs C# client found here: https://github.com/BaseXdb/basex/releases/tag/8.2.3 I wonder if it's the latest, as it's missing the nonce section in the Session constructor. It seems to work perfectly by just adding it. Thanks! Martín.

Hi Scoobs, unless you already know a lot about XML, XPath & XQuery (and just didn't use java much so far), i think BaseX might be a little overkill for your use-case. I would recommend an App like Gnome Contacts (allows creation of custom fields for grad dates, courses and freeform notes) for your contacts database, this would be more "fast-and-dirty" and wouldn't require you to "learn new tricks"... Hi Scoobbs, you are perfectly right, the basex available on ubuntu repository is quite old. But, your mail smells (bad) ! Basex team is responsible on developing basex, and not on publishing packages for all OS, as explained by Dirk Kirsten. You can't fight again BaseX team if the actual packaging do not meet your requirements. BaseX distribute a package that can be fully installed on a complex environment in a very easy way - very easy. You just have to read the documentation to install BaseX on your Ubuntu server. For me, to install 8.2.3, it took exactly 12 minutes to make basex to run perfectly. If you don't understand the documentation, and still have problems to install, all list-users will be happy to help you. You could also think to a bit of sponsoring, it could help to produce a package for Ubuntu, during august, which is vacation-time for the whole north hemisphere. It was just a matter of cliking here and there(actually no more than two clicks) and there I was. It even looks like BaseX realy works!!!Well, now that I have decided to try to use it, there came a message saying a new version is available, namely 8.2.3.Alright, I agreed I should update it. Same XQuery faster 2nd+ time

Hi, i'm a student learning XPath/XQuery/BaseX and currently experiment with XQueries on large xml files in BaseX, hope i didn't miss something obvious :) Test: 1st FLOWR query on collection: ~700ms 2nd+ identical query same collection: just ~200ms ! ? My XML-files are OPTIMIZE'd on import, but the created indexes would influence the 1st query already. This is a great speed bump, but hard on tests that assume a first query on a recently imported new collection. So i wondered how this behavior could be explained & maybe turned off for testing purposes? Cheers, Philipp

Hello, I want to monitor garbage collect on basex server. Performance and heavy load

Hi guys, I'm quite new to BaseX. I've read a bit already, but perhaps you can help so I can investigate further. We are having a performance problem with our BaseX server. We're running it on a VM, and hitting it from around 5 web servers. Under no stress, I get this timing from the log for a 1191 bytes file. 00:01:23.526 ww.aa.yy.xx:56312 admin REQUEST [PUT] http://basex.xxxxxx:8984/rest/PaymentLogs_1/WRP.BR-4273791-1_PaymentGateway… ww.aa.yy.xx:56312 admin 201 1 resource(s) replaced in 1401.17 ms. 1441.24 ms A call to /rest takes about 4-5 ms (it's called around once each 2 seconds, though it's not needed): 00:01:23.520 ww.aa.yy.zz:56312 admin REQUEST [GET] http://basex.xxxxxxxx:8984/rest00:01:23.524 ww.aa.yy.xx:56312 admin 200 4.67 ms Is the 1400 ms time normal for storing one xml file less than 2kb (storing a 10kb file took 1200 ms, so I'm not sure size mattered that much)? And also, when the load starts to get heavier, from 7 to 12 files per second, BaseX server quickly starts to get slower, then taking minutes to respond, until finally it starts giving errors about the database being currently opened by another process, and too many open files. Many connections remain in the CLOSE_WAIT state, and the server is no longer usable. Is it reasonable to expect to [PUT] more than 10 files per second, some of them taking more than 10kb? We're using it for logging, so that's a lot of xml files. If it's reasonable to use it that way, I'll dig more into optimizing it. Is anyone using it in a similar way? Thanks, Martín.
