Java direct access vs client/server

All: >From the performance perspective in a Java application, it it better to go straight to the BaseX database or use a client/server approach (localhost). I would assume direct access should perform better but there might but cases where a server has the advantage (caching, multiple contexts, etc.) Would welcome your comments or experiences on this. many thanks *P

Installing on Ubuntu 11.04 or other Linux distributions

Jan, I now have BaseXGui running fine on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. I'm sending this to the mailing list so future potential users can see that it's quick and easy to install in Linux. The BaseX web site mentions that the system is in the Ubuntu 11.10 repositories, but I wasn't finding it in my 11.04 system. All that I had to do was to add the Debian repository to my list of repositories in Synaptic Package Manager, then click the reload button, and voila, there it was when I searched the Synaptic "All" files for "basex". A few clicks and I had it installed. But it didn't install an entry into the Applications menu, so I located it with "whereis" and launched it from a terminal window at /usr/bin/basexgui to confirm it worked. Then I created a desktop launcher for it, which only had a generic icon. There may be an icon in the BaseX Debian files, but I didn't find it quickly, so I copied the BaseX icon from my previous installation of it on my Windows 7 partition onto my desktop in Ubuntu. (I love that Ubuntu can read into Windows' file system on my dual-boot computer.) I clicked on the icon and it opened in an icon viewer, saved it to a folder in my user home. Then I changed the launcher to use that icon. It's pretty now. It created a database for me from a test xml file, so I'm good to go. The Debian repository entry in Synaptic is: "deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian sid main" (without the quote marks). You should use the appropriate URL for the Debian mirror site in your part of the world. Click on the Debian link at the BaseX.org downloads page, then click "all", and you'll see the available mirrors. Hope this helps others get started with BaseX on their Linux system, Stan

conditionally output cdata?

Hi, I'm trying to conditionally output CDATA, but don't seem to be finding the right syntax for it. This works: declare option output:cdata-section-elements "div"; <div><![CDATA['<div/>']]></div> But this doesn't: declare option output:cdata-section-elements "div"; <div>{ if (1 = 2) then '' else <![CDATA['<div/>']]> }</div> Any hints on how to do this? BaseX 7.x windows drive letter regression?

Greets- Just bumped to 7.0.1 and java api calls to cmd.Add are failing with 'invalid filename' anytime a path is passed in that includes a drive letter such as "C:/dir/test.xml". If I remove the "C:" it works.... Also tried upper/lower case drive letter. other api calls such as an xquery that writes to an output file (file:write('c:/dir/output.xml',$results) works fine... Next, if I pull out the c:, the add document fails with a "Document is empty." Switch back to 6.8 and everything works fine... win32 jdk6_u29 Regards, Chad

Python API

Hi All Stan spent some time on trying to convert Python lib to use Python 3.x and run into problem, mainly because Python 3.x is handling strings as array of unicode chars, and 2.x is using it as array of bytes. As the lib is using bytes a lot (bytes are read and written to and from sockets, and very often there are "strange" bytes like 0x0 etc.) this change affects core of the solution. If there is someone willing to take care of this task, the task is available free of charge :-) Attached are my older unit tests from time of my optimization effort - it could be helpful for conversion (as writing unit tests is first recommended task). I would be pleased to take care of it, but what I lack the most today is some free capacity. With best regards Jan *Ing. stopping the basexhttp server

Hi: Under linux, I use the basexhttp script in the bin folder to start the BaseX server and Jetty HTTP server (for REST and Webdav) To stop the process, I then copied the file into basexhttpstop nd added the stop keyword to the last line: java -cp "$CP" $VM org.basex.api.BaseXHTTP "$@" stop However, this only seems to affect the BaseX server (Jetty continues to run and listen on port 8984). I can of course kill the process but would prefer for this to be available from the command line. Could this be adjusted? thanks *P
