The following query should work fine (at least with the latest snapshot; I haven’t tried 8.4.3):
let $f := function-lookup(xs:QName('db:replace'), 3) return updating $f('db', 'x.xml', <a/>)
Did you specify the "updating" keyword [1]? Could you give us a little example?
