I don't know if I understand your request correctly, but the problem seems not so much related to basex, rather to your post-processing needs.

Tools in this context that spring to my mind are:

http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/1.0/index.html -> XML to PDF, Image, etc. http://www.re.be/css2xslfo/index.xhtml -> HTML to FO http://princexml.com/ -> HTML to PDF

I have a question, which sound a little bit strange. Is there away to serialize to image files (png, pdf etc.)? I am graceful fro every hint. I used to use Mac until two months ago. There I serialized to html documents and then used a secondary software to convert these html files to pngs. Unfortunately I can't find anything like that on Linux, with which I am working now.
