Jürgen Wedekind RIP It is with great sadness that we hear about the passing of Jürgen Wedekind (1956-2021). Jürgen made seminal contributions to LFG and unification-based grammars, including the use of classical logics in describing feature-based grammars, properties of machine translation and complexity and decidability of generation with feature-based grammars, with a string of publications in the journal of Computational Linguistics (1999, 2012, 2014 and 2020). Jürgen was our colleague at IMS, University of Stuttgart, Germany (1985-1996), a research scientist at the University of Tübingen, Germany (1996-1999), a senior researcher and graduate course director at the Center for Language Technology and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (1999-2021) and a frequent visiting scholar and consultant at XEROX PARC, California. Jürgen obtained his PhD in 1990, and his Habilitation in 1998. We miss Jürgen as a colleague and a friend. We share our sorrow with Jürgen's family. Anette, Thierry and Josef

FINAL CALL Workshop Experimental and Corpus-based Approaches to Ellipsis, SLE 2022 (Bucharest)

Dear colleagues, We are very pleased to announce that our proposal for the fourth edition of the *Experimental and Corpus-based Approaches to Ellipsis (ECBAE) *has been accepted for the *SLE 2022 meeting in Bucharest* (*https://societaslinguistica.eu/sle2022 <https://societaslinguistica.eu/sle2022>*). We therefore renew our call for papers for this workshop here. Like previous iterations, this workshop functions as a forum for ellipsis research, with special emphasis on methodologies aiming to improve the empirical foundations of the subfield. Contributions to the workshop will make headway in long-standing theoretical questions surrounding ellipsis (some of which are listed below) and will furnish advice on practical issues, such as how experimental methodologies can be improved to return more empirically reliable and theoretically impactful results. · Are structural cues used to recover the meaning of an ellipsis site, or is recoverability solely a semantic/pragmatic phenomenon? · How do different types of ellipsis differ from each other, and can some ellipsis types be subsumed under others? · Which factors are involved in yielding cross-linguistic differences in licensing specific elliptical utterances (e.g., syntactic, processing, prosodic, discursive constraints)? The line-up for ECBAE 4 is designed to offer a wide variety of perspectives on these research questions. The proposed workshop aims to cover a broad spectrum of ellipsis types (e.g. fragments, sluicing, post-auxiliary ellipsis, gapping, pseudogapping, etc.) and a range of methodologies (e.g. acceptability judgment, corpus-driven, production experiments, self-paced reading). We invite additional presentations for this workshop, which should address the research topics outlined above. While we specifically encourage contributions that can support their claims via experimental or corpus data, we are also open to papers that cannot yet deliver such empirical support, but make very clear-cut empirical predictions that can, in principle, be given such empirical support. Conference mode: We are currently planning a physical conference and hope that speakers will be able to attend in person. A synchronous, online participation option will be available. LFG22 welcomes work within the formal architecture of Lexical-Functional Grammar as well as typological, formal, and computational work within the 'spirit of LFG' as a lexicalist approach to language employing a parallel, constraint-based framework. The conference aims to promote interaction and collaboration among researchers interested in non-derivational approaches to grammar, where grammar is seen as the interaction of (perhaps violable) constraints from multiple levels of structuring, including those of syntactic categories, grammatical relations, semantics and discourse. SUBMISSIONS: TALKS AND POSTERS The main conference sessions will involve 45-minute talks (30 min + 15 min discussion), and poster presentations. Contributions can focus on results from completed as well as ongoing research, with an emphasis on novel approaches, methods, ideas, and perspectives, whether descriptive, theoretical, formal or computational. Presentations should describe original, unpublished work. DISSERTATION SESSION As in previous years, we are hoping to hold a special session that will give students the chance to present recent PhD dissertations (or other student research dissertations). The dissertations must be completed by the time of the conference, and they should be made publicly accessible (e.g., on the World Wide Web). The talks in this session should provide an overview of the main original points of the dissertation; the talks will be 20 minutes, followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Students should note that the main sessions are certainly also open to student submissions. Students who present papers in either session will receive a small subvention towards their conference costs from the International LFG Association (ILFGA). TIMETABLE Deadline for abstracts: 15 February 2022, 23:59 UTC-12 (midnight anywhere on Earth) Notification of acceptance: 31 March 2022 Conference: 12 July - 14 July 2022 SUBMISSION SPECIFICATIONS The language of the conference is English, and all abstracts must be written in English. All abstracts should be submitted using the online submission system. Submissions should be in the form of abstracts only. Abstracts can be up to three A4 pages, including figures and references. Abstracts should be in 10pt or larger type, with margins of at least 2cm on all four sides, and should include a title. HPSG proceedings of 2021 out and migration to new place + DOIs

Hi everybody, The proceedings of this year's HPSG conference are out now. This took a bit longer than usual but it also was a highly complex task this year. The complete set of proceedings starting from 2001 was migrated to a new place: https://proceedings.hpsg.xyz/ Preparations and negotiations for this started in April. Negotiations with CSLI Pubs in September, programming and testing in September. I created a new script reading in the abstracts and creating XML that can be imported into the open journal system. We collected ORCIDs of authors and entered them. I tried to buy a web domain for the proceedings, but hpsg.org costs $3.500. We now got hpsg.xyz for free. (The Fachinformationsdienst Linguistik Frankfurt/Main, our new host, pays for the domain.) All HPSG papers, including the old ones, have DOIs now. I am also CCing the LFG list since this also applies to HeadLex papers from 2016, which include LFG papers. I wrote yet another script for the CSLI page that points to the DOIs now rather than to the PDFs in Stanford. The pages are not in place yet, but I hope this will happen sometime soon. Dear colleagues, please feel free to share this announcement with interested students. *One PhD position (TVL-13, 65%) for work at the interface between prosodic structure and formal/computational LFG grammars at the University of Konstanz, Germany* Application Deadline: 31.1.2022 Start of the project: April 2022 We are looking for a PhD student to work with us on the joint DFG/AHRC-project "Prosodic structure at the interface between language and speech" awarded to Tina Bögel (University of Konstanz) and Alice Turk (University of Edinburgh). Both language redundancy and prosodic structure affect characteristics of speech related to acoustic salience and intelligibility. The idea that prosodic structure is the interface between grammar and speech led to proposals that speakers plan the prosodic structure of an utterance in order to make less predictable parts of speech more intelligible via its effects on acoustic saliency. The goals of this project are 1) to test the hypothesis that prosodic structure is the interface between language and speech, and 2) to implement this interface in a (computational) LFG-grammar in order to test and evaluate our architectural assumptions. The PhD student's project will relate to the integration of language redundancy effects into the LFG modules (e.g., to determine an appropriate representation of bigram frequencies and their effects in the lexicon, syntactic structure, and prosodic structure, and to implement them accordingly into a computational LFG grammar). The PhD student will also assist in the design and execution of several speech production experiments in close collaboration with all members of the project. Your profile: - A very good MA-degree in a relevant field - good English language skills - basic knowledge in phonetics and statistics - general knowledge of syntax It is a plus if you have any of these skills: - knowledge of Lexical Functional Grammar (or even its computational implementation) - experience with speech production/perception experiments - rule-based computational or programming skills We do not expect you to be the perfect match, but we expect you to acquire the necessary skills within a year (with support from us and classes offered at the Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz) and to be open towards different subfields within linguistics.
