Liebe Kollegen und Kolleginnen,
anbei leite ich Ihnen einen Call for Papers weiter, der für Sie von
Interesse sein könnte.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Stefanie Eifler
Dear colleague,
we would like to draw your attention to a
DwB\Training Course: Working with data from official statistics in Europe
particularly the European Union Labour Force Survey
Ljubljana (Slovenia), 17\19 September 2014,
hosted by Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia and
Social Science Data Archives at the University of Ljubljana
One of the core objectives of Data without Boundaries is to promote the use of integrated official
statistics in Europe. The Data without Boundaries project seeks to inform the research community on
possibilities for application and the potential for social enquiry of official European microdata.
To this aim Data without Boundaries, in cooperation with Eurostat, is organizing a series of three day
training courses on integrated Eurostat datasets. Courses will provide information on available
microdata in Europe as well as ways to access these data. This fourth course will focus on the
European Union Labour Force Survey (EU\LFS). The training is hosted by the Statistical Office of the
Republic of Slovenia and the Social Science Data Archives at the University of Ljubljana; other
partners involved in this course are Eurostat (Luxembourg), GESIS\Leibniz Institute for the Social
Sciences (Mannheim), Rseau Quetelet (Paris) and INSEE\Institut National de la Statistique et des
Etudes Economiques (Paris).
The course is aimed at post graduate and senior researchers from throughout Europe who are
seeking to conduct research on the basis of the EU\LFS. Besides highlighting the legal and
administrative aspects of data access the course will demonstrate the possibilities of the EU\LFS in a
hands\on computer session which will explore the potential for both international as well as
longitudinal analysis. Basic understanding in multivariate statistical methods and SPSS will be
required.
The course will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia from the 17th to the 19th of September 2014 and will
consist of the following parts:
Part I: Overview of European Data from Official Statistics
Part II: Introduction to LFS
Part III: Practical Training Session
For more information see http://www.dwbproject.org/events/tc4.html
Interested parties should send a short application letter (max. 500 words) explaining their motivation
to participate in this course to 4th\dwb\training(a)gesis.org.
Deadline for applications will be August 11, 2014.
For further information please contact christof.wolf(a)gesis.org<mailto:christof.wolf@gesis.org>.
Participants will have to cover their own expenses for travel and accommodation, attendance of the
course is free.
Dear colleagues,
***** Sorry for cross-posting ********
we would like to draw attention to the CfP for our session "Achieving construct equivalence in cross-cultural research. Methodological challenges and innovative approaches" at the conference "Modes, Measurement, Modelling: Achieving Equivalence in Quantitative Research" in Mannheim, Germany (24.-25. October 2014) organized by Tobias Gummer and Henning Best on behalf of the ESC working group on "Quantitative Methods in Criminology" (EQMC) and the ESA Research Network on "Quantitative Methods" (ESA RN21). See http://www.gesis.org/en/events/conferences/modes-measurement-modelling/ for further information.
Below you find the details of our session. Please email your abstracts to wolfgang.aschauer(a)sbg.ac.at<mailto:wolfgang.aschauer@sbg.ac.at> (session organizer) as well as cc to henning.best(a)gesis.org<mailto:henning.best@gesis.org> by 15 August 2014 at the latest.
Proposals should contain a title and an abstract of up to 200 words.
Best regards,
Wolfgang Aschauer & Martin Weichbold
---------------------------------------------------------
CfP Session
The main research aim of cross-national survey instruments (such as the European Social Survey, the ISSP or the World Value Survey) is to achieve comparable results and the key term to reach this goal is "equivalence", more exactly: "functional equivalence". Regarding certain aspects (e.g. sampling, survey modes, translation) considerable progress has been made during the last years but in certain central areas there is still a considerable need for further research.
One particular area is the challenge to achieve construct equivalence and to guarantee content validity of the major research themes in cross-cultural research. In many applied projects we can still observe the problematic strategy of an unchallenged use of Western-based approaches which claim universality. On the other hand several researchers already started to apply rather strict tests of equivalence (e.g. Multi Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MGCFA)) before conducting a cross- national analysis of survey data.
In the proposed session we aim to search for adequate methods to test for construct equivalence, to look for strategies to enhance content validity of certain (culturally sensitive) constructs and to discuss alternative and innovative approaches (in various research projects) of equivalence testing. Quantitative researchers who are active in those research fields are highly welcome to present methodological groundwork on the proposed issues or to present their own strategies to deal with construct equivalence in ongoing research projects.
