First Call for Papers of the 5th Conference of the Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft Statistik, (DAGStat 2019) Registration is now open and we cordially invite you to register for the 5th Conference of the Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft Statistik (DAGStat 2019) from March 18 - 22, 2019, at LMU Munich, under https://www.dagstat2019.statistik.uni-muenchen.de/index.html Under the motto "Statistics under one Umbrella" the planned conference program contains contributions of all areas of statistics and many applications of statistical methods. Scientific exchange between the participating societies is one main aims of the conference. This is reflected by embedding two important annual meetings, the "65. Biometrisches Kolloquium" of the German Region of the International Biometric Society and the "Spring Meeting" of the Deutsche Statistische Gesellschaft. For the conference, Sara van de Geer, Andrew Gelman, Donald B. Rubin and Michael Jordan have agreed to be plenary speakers. Dear colleagues, Please be kindly reminded that the deadline for submissions to give a talk or win the pre-registration challenge at the MZES Open Social Science Conference 2019 (OSSC19) is approaching fast. Please Submit your extended abstracts (750 words max) before 22 August 2018, 24:00 CEST. OSSC19 will be held at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) in Mannheim, Germany, from 25-27 January 2019. It offers an opportunity to connect with the open science movement for all researchers from across the social sciences who are interested in debating, advancing, and practicing open science. OSSC19 will feature keynotes by Jeremy Freese (Stanford University), Thomas König (University of Mannheim), Arthur Lupia (University of Michigan), and Julia Rohrer (University of Leipzig). There are two options for you to participate in the conference: 1. You can <https://www.mzes.uni-mannheim.de/openscience/index.php/give-a-talk/> give a talk that provides discussion of, a methodological advance to, or a demonstration of best practices in open social science. 2. You can submit an extended abstract for a <https://www.mzes.uni-mannheim.de/openscience/index.php/pre-registration-cha llenge/> study you would like to conduct (i.e., a pre-registered analysis plan). The submitter(s) of the best abstract will get the opportunity present their study plan at OSSC19 and will win free collection of survey panel data from a high-quality national probability sample or, alternatively, financial support for a data collection effort of the participants own choosing. About a decade ago, John Ioannidis claimed that most published research findings are false. While seeming outrageous at the time, a growing body of meta-scientific research in the behavioral and social sciences substantiated this claim, causing uncertainty about the trustworthiness of published scientific findings. We believe that threats to the validity of published findings in the social sciences are widespread and systemic. Therefore, this conference promotes introspection about the current state of social science research and exchange on the opportunities for institutional and methodological improvement in the future. Below you will find information on how to apply for the different formats. ------------------------------------- CONFERENCE SCOPE ------------------------------------- The Symposium is an interdisciplinary venue that brings together researchers from a diverse range of disciplines to contribute to the definition and exploration of the societal challenges in Computational Social Science, especially around the topics of inequality and imbalance. A jury will select the best presentation (including any created resources, such as secondary datasets or analysis code) to be awarded the very first Euro CSS Dataset Challenge Award. The work presented at the symposium can be early stage, but should be methodically sound and provide either preliminary insights into an interesting research question or first inductively-reached conclusions of systematic patterns of bias in the dataset. These can also be on a meta-level or may be designated to positioning the work in broader theoretical contexts, e.g., about biases in the data collection. Submissions should be abstracts of approx. 2-3 pages (maximum up to 1000 words plus references and figures). It's just like a poetry slam, but with science instead of poems. Slammers are completely free to do whatever they want on stage, everything is allowed including slides, games, the more creative, the better! The only two rules are: 1) The topic of the slam has to be related to data science / computational social science or to social media, online data or digital behavioral data, and 2) Presentations should not take more than 8 minutes. The EuroCSS Science Slam will take place in the evening of December 5th in Die Wohngemeinschaft (https://www.die-wohngemeinschaft.net/en/). To present, send an email to garcia(a)csh.ac.at<mailto:garcia@csh.ac.at> with a short proposal of your topic for the slam and we will contact you.
