Mit freundlichen Grüssen, Christof Wolf ================================================ Gemeinsame Sitzung der Sektion Modellbildung und Simulation und der Sektion Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung auf dem Soziologiekongress in Jena 2008 CALL FOR PAPERS Experimente in der Soziologie Der Vorteil experimenteller Methoden ist vor allem, dass mit ihrer Hilfe Hypothesen über kausale Zusammenhänge geprüft werden können. Seit langem wurden in der Soziologie experimentelle Studien und insbesondere Feldexperimente durchgeführt. Heute werden diese Methoden aber sehr viel seltener angewandt als in den Nachbarwissenschaften. In der Ökonomie z. B. werden in zunehmendem Maße Forschungsergebnisse publiziert, die auf experimentellen Methoden basieren. Obwohl es einzelne Zweige der Soziologie gibt, in denen das Experiment heute zu den Standardwerkzeugen gehört, beispielsweise Methodenexperimente in der Surveyforschung, erscheint eine stärkere Rückbesinnung auf experimentelle Methoden zur Erforschung kausaler Zusammenhänge wünschenswert. Willkommen sind - konzeptionelle Beiträge zur Anwendung experimenteller Methoden in der Soziologie (Formen experimenteller Methoden, Einsatzmöglichkeiten, forschungsethische Aspekte, Richtlinien zur Durchführung, etc.), - exemplarische Anwendungen von Labor- und Feldexperimenten, - Validierungs- und sonstige Methodenstudien, - oder auch Replikationsstudien zu zentralen Ergebnissen der experimentellen Sozial-forschung. Dies gilt umso mehr, je mehr Länder in die Analyse einbezogen werden und so die Idee des Mehrebenensystems nicht nur im Rahmen des Studiendesign, sondern auch im Rahmen der Datenanalyse wirksam werden kann. Die international vergleichende Sozialforschung hat jedoch noch viele Probleme zu lösen. Dies betrifft insbesondere die Frage der Vergleichbarkeit. Die entsprechenden Probleme beginnen bei der Konzeption des Erhebungsinstruments, erstrecken sich aber auch auf den Stichprobenrahmen, den Feldzugang, die Feldorganisation, die Datenerhebung, die Datenaufbereitung und die Datenanalyse. Willkommen sind alle Beiträge, die sich mit methodischen Fragen der international verglei-chenden Sozialforschung oder mit Fragen der Modellierung des Zusammenspiels makro- und mikrosoziologischer Bedingungen beschäftigen. Research master's 'Sociology and Social Research'

January 2008 Research master's "Sociology and Social Research" at ICS-Utrecht Dear Colleague, The Department of Sociology and the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS) at Utrecht University offer a two-year research master's program "Sociology and Social Research" that is completely taught in English. The research master's program has a clear profile, offering structured and systematic training in theoretically and methodologically advanced research in sociology and the social sciences in general. Special features of the program include: - A strong focus on the integration of social theory, empirical research, and methods of data-analysis. - In various courses, students gain extensive hands on experience in social science data analysis. - Students gain hands on experience in writing a publishable research article in English: the master's thesis that completes the program is written in the format of a publishable research article. In fact, experience shows that many students do indeed submit their thesis to a journal and quite some of these submissions are accepted for publication. Students benefit from intensive supervision. Instructors involved in teaching the program and supervising students inlude prominent researcher from the Department of Sociology and the ICS such as Vincent Buskens, Henk Flap, Tanja van der Lippe, Ineke Maas, Anne-Rigt Poortman, Werner Raub, Rene Torenvlied, Frank van Tubergen, Beate Volker, Jeroen Weesie, and others. Students likewise benefit from much interaction and collaboration in a relatively small group of peers. Drop out rates of students from the program are very low and almost all students entering the program do complete it in due time within two years. The profile of the program ensures that the labor market position of alumni is excellent: students who have completed the program are very successful in acquiring subsequent positions as PhD students, as researchers in institutes and organizations outside the university system, as trainees, etc. The target group of students consists of promising students with a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent period of at least three years of undergraduate study and qualifications that justify the expectation of successful completion of the program in due time. This includes students with a BA Sociology or Social Sciences, broadly conceived and including Economics, Political Sciences, Public Administration, Demography, and (Social) Psychology. Students from outside the Netherlands are explicitly encouraged to apply and can easily follow the program since it is taught in English. About 30-50% of the students are students from outside the Netherlands. Admission to the program is selective. "Sociology and Social Research" is one of Utrecht University's Prestige master programs and thus benefits from special funds of Utrecht University. Some teaching and research assistantships are available for talented applicants. Also, funding is available for participation in summer schools outside the Netherlands (for example, Essex and Ann Arbor). Each year, a new group of students enters the program. We are currently searching for talented candidates for the academic year 2008/2009. Courses for this group will start on September 1, 2008. The deadline for applications for the academic year 2008/2009 is March 1, 2008. The number of new students per year is limited to 15. We received unusually many applications already for the early bird-deadline (December 1, 2007) but we expect that some places in the program will still be available for students using the March-deadline for their application. Peter Ohly (peter.ohly(a)gesis.org); Max Stempfhuber (max.stempfhuber(a)gesis.org)* Information and its dissemination are seen as important factors of productivity in global exchange and competition. Here, information is primarily understood as scientific knowledge and research results - which might enhance science itself as well as application domains. On the one hand the question arises, how such information can be acquired, processed and distributed optimally. Approaches such as user participation, data accumulation, value adding and qualitative filtering are of concern. On the other hand, the information on scientific outcomes is used to judge about the structures of disciplines, developments in research and excellence of institutions and individual scientists. This questions the reliability of information and its sources, completeness, comparability and validity of data, as well as the role of indicators for positional judgements. This session targets at the improvement of information transfer as well as diagnostic procedures on information databases and their mutual relationship. Of interest is also, how the scientific community adapts in this context. Please send your abstract as soon as possible to session organizers. Dear colleagues, the Campbell Collaboration (C2) Education Coordination Group, supported by the Department of Psychology II at the University of Mannheim, is organizing a workshop on performing systematic reviews: http://www.systematic-reviews.de This training program has been designed to provide PhD, doctoral, or research level participants with the fundamental background required to conduct a systematic review of treatment, intervention, therapy, or instruction in the area of education. The workshop will take place at the University of Mannheim (Germany) and encompass two consecutive sessions: In the first session, held between February 12-15, 2008, participants will * Select a Topic for Review * Develop a Draft Protocol to include -> Learn Information Retrieval Strategies -> Coding Form -> Quality Assessment Standards -> Methodological Criteria for -> Study Inclusion -> Statistical Analysis In the second session, held between June 24-27, 2008, participants will: * Learn how to use Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software * Conduct the analyses for studies collected to include: -> Effect Size Calculations -> Sensitivity Analysis -> Publication Bias Analysis -> Synthesize Effects Sizes -> Heterogeneity Analysis -> Missing Data Analysis * Prepare a Draft version of the final review. In between these two sessions, participants will have the opportunity to closely interact with instructors and other participants with the aid of a Web-based learning and collaboration system. The workshop is explicitly designed to facilitate the completion of a systematic review in the area of education. Please circulate the following call, thanks Christof Wolf * ISA-RC33 7th International Conference in Naples, September 1-5, 2008 * Call for Papers for a Session on * Comparative Analysis of European Microdata from Official Statistics * Chairs of the session: Christof Wolf & Heike Wirth, GESIS-ZUMA, Mannheim, Germany The session focuses on microdata provided by either national statistical agencies in Europe or Eurostat, such as the European Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS), the European Study on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC), the European Structure of Earning Survey (EU-SES) or Time Use Surveys in Europe (see HETUS project). These data sets are the EU reference sources regarding employment, income, social exclusion, earning and time use. Even though most of these data are yet not easily accessible for researchers, this might change in the future. The data offer several advantages for social-structural analysis: Non-response is typically low and sample sizes are usually very large making the analysis of even small subgroups viable. With the increasing focus on (as well as need of) international comparative research, more and more EU researchers interested in social-structural analysis will turn their attention to these data. However since the use of official microdata is rather new ground and the data are directly or indirectly influenced by EU-regulations, there is a need not only to discuss substantive but also methodological questions. Presentations focusing on methodological as well as on substantive issues are welcome. Among the former are questions of data quality, cross-national and inter-temporal comparability, and statistical modeling. Presentations must be comparative and include data from at least three countries.
