Best regards Jan Call for Abstracts: WEB DATA OPP Workshop March 18-19, 2024, Barcelona We are pleased to announce that the ERC-funded WEB DATA OPP project, which investigates how new measurement opportunities linked mainly to the growing presence of smartphones could complement or replace conventional survey data in order to get better or new insights (see https://www.upf.edu/web/webdataopp), is organising a workshop. Event Details * Date: March 18th and 19th, 2024 * Location: RECSM-Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Ciutadella Campus, Ramon Trias Fargas, 25-27, 08005 Barcelona, Spain Workshop Focus The expansion of the Internet and the development of a range of new active and passive measurement tools, particularly on mobile devices, present exciting opportunities for survey researchers, such as visual or geolocation data capture. Using these new measurement opportunities could reduce respondent burden, improve data quality, and extend measurement into new domains, allowing to answer questions that could not be answered so far and to improve the decisions of key actors. However, while many people speak about these ideas, little research has implemented such possibilities so far. Besides, researchers interested in using such data face a range of key issues, including technical and ethical ones, and very little is known about how to best deal with all these challenges. Thus, the primary objective of this workshop is to engage in fruitful discussions surrounding these challenges presented by the integration of new data types within the context of web surveys. We are particularly interested in the following types of data 1. Visual Data: Exploring the incorporation of screenshots, photos, or videos as potential ways to provide responses in web surveys. 2. Voice Data: Examining the use of dictation or voice recording functions for survey responses. 3. Digital Traces Data: Leveraging digital traces data, especially those collected through meters, to complement or replace conventional survey questions. 4. In-the-Moment Surveys: Investigating the possibilities of conducting surveys triggered by passive data, particularly metered data or geolocation information, shortly after the detection of relevant events. Presentation Emphasis Participants should center their presentations on the problems encountered when designing surveys or experiments including these innovative data types, rather than focusing on research outcomes. In line with this, we welcome works in progress and presentations about studies that have not yet been fielded, as long as they offer insights into the diverse problems researchers face when using new data types. Active Participation To ensure a productive workshop, all participants should actively engage by providing constructive feedback on the work presented by others. Liebe Kollegen*innen, das Deutsche Zentrum für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung (DZHW) in Hannover sucht eine Projektleitung für seinen Online-Erhebungsbereich: https://www.dzhw.eu/pdf/jobs/hf243_zofar_pl_08_23.pdf Die Projektleitungsstelle ist in Abteilung 4 "Infrastruktur und Methoden" angesiedelt und wird das Zofar-Team leiten (Zofar ist das hauseigene Befragungstool). Abteilung 4 zeichnet sich durch eine innovative und interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung aus und forscht an den Schnittstellen zwischen Survey-Forschung und Data/Computer Science. Derzeit besteht Abteilung 4 hauptsächlich aus den Arbeitsgruppen von Dr. David Broneske (Computer Science) und Prof. Dr. Jan Karem Höhne (Computational Survey and Social Science) sowie dem angegliederten Forschungsdatenzentrum (FDZ). Dear colleagues, Please consider submitting your published work related to online research for the DGOF Best Paper Award 2024. Best regards, Florian Keusch *** DGOF Best Paper Award 2024 The German Society for Online Research (DGOF) annually recognizes outstanding scientific contributions in online research through the DGOF Best Paper Award for a researcher or group of researchers. The DGOF by-laws define “online research” as any type of research about computers or other devices that are connected by a network, in particular the Internet. Online research includes online based data collection (e.g., web surveys in online panels), mobile research with smartphones, tablets, and wearables, and the collection and analysis of social media data, administrative data, data from passive measurements, and other Big Data sources. The prize will be awarded to a paper that provides a fundamental scientific contribution to the advancement of the methods of online research. Topics that are suitable for the award can be found in the program of the annual General Online Research (GOR) conference (www.gor.de). Both theoretical/conceptual and empirical/methodological papers are considered for the award. Papers that do not focus on online research but, for example, merely use online data collection (e.g., through a web survey) to answer a substantive research question will not be considered. The award is worth 500 Euro and will be presented at the annual GOR conference. An abstract (and, if available, a preprint) of the award-winning paper will be posted to the DGOF website (www.dgof.de). To be considered for the award, papers must be published in an outlet that uses a peer-review process (e.g., peer-reviewed journal, full papers in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, refereed book chapter) at the time of submission. Papers written in German or English and published not earlier than 2022 (if the paper was published online-first, then the online-first publication date counts) can be submitted for the DGOF Best Paper Award 2024.
