Please find further information on ISA RC33 (Research Committee on Logic & Methodology of the International Sociology Association) on http://www.rc33.org/ Session Topic This session aims at discussing how to use and integrate non‐moving visual data (especially photographs, maps, pictures, mechanical drawings, paintings, etc.) in the research process. Drawing on the visual resp. iconic turn (during the mid‐1990s) we are interested in why and how social scientists (among others) utilize this kind of data to explore social phenomena and social processes, e.g. as a mean for data collection and analysis, for illustration purposes or as evidence to prove their theoretical hypotheses. Papers should address one of the following questions either at a more general methodological level or using a concrete example of a specific research project:
(1) How and why can non‐moving visual data be used to broaden the empirical basis for certain research questions?
(2) For each specific data type (e.g. photographs or maps), it is important to ask about their specific characteristics and how they affect interpretation. For which kind of theoretical and thematic research questions is this kind of data suitable and how can it be analysed?
(3) Where and how can non‐moving visual data be collected? Which sampling strategies can be applied and how does it affect the generalization of results? What are the advantages and disadvantages of collecting and analysing this type of data?
(4) What are the specific data requirements and how can validity of this kind of data be assessed?
(5) Which methods of data analysis are appropriate for non‐moving visual data?
