The 8th European Sociological Association (ESA) Conference, Glasgow 3rd to 6th September 2007 The Research Network "RENCORE: Methods for Comparative Research on Europe" is planning four sessions and the biannual meeting for its members: 1st session: Standardizing Socio-Demographic Variables for Cross National Social Surveys 2nd session: Methods in European Survey Research 3rd session: Methodological Aspects in Comparative Survey Research 4th session: Comparative Analysis of European Data from Official Statistics Call for papers 1st session: Standardizing Socio-Demographic Variables for Cross National Social Surveys organized by: Juergen H.P. Hoffmeyer-Zlotnik, GESIS-ZUMA, Mannheim/GER For the measurement of socio-demographic variables, the knowledge of the various underlying concepts, the cultural and national structures of the variables and the usual national indicators are necessary. With this knowledge functional equivalence of socio-demographic variables can be reached by harmonizing the variables. The sessions have on the agenda the way from national concepts of variables to international comparable measurements and indicators, the progress in methods using comparative survey data and the methodological aspects of survey research analyzing cross national and cross cultural surveys. 2nd session: Methods in European Survey Research organized by: Uwe Warner, CEPS/INSTEAD, Differdange/LUX European comparative survey researches hold all methodological problems which can be found also in national survey research. But in international survey research additional methodological problem appears based on different cultures. The second session has on the agenda methodological topics on European comparative survey research like national effects of sample designs, the scaling, the measurement of values, the translation and the functional equivalence, the data quality, etc. and the comparative exposure of these problems. 3rd session: Methodological Aspects in Comparative Survey Research organized by: Juergen H.P. Hoffmeyer-Zlotnik, GESIS-ZUMA, Mannheim/GER Themes for the third session are: interview cultures and mode effects, particular target population groups (older workers, children, migrants, etc.); theme or objective oriented surveys (health, wealth, intergenerational relations, etc.), etc. 4th session: Comparative Analysis of European Data from Official Statistics organized by: Christof Wolf, GESIS-ZUMA, Mannheim/GER This session focuses on data provided by either national statistical offices in Europe or Eurostat, e.g. national censuses, the European Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS) or the European Study on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC). These data sets offer several advantages for social-structural analysis: Sample sizes are usually very large making the identification of even small subgroups viable and non-response is usually very modest. Since more and more official data are directly or indirectly influenced by EU-regulations and more and more data of this kind is produced in several if not all countries of the EU researchers interested in analysing the social structure of their societies should pay more attention to this data source. Possible topics of presentations in this session include data availability, strategies for anonymising official micro data, strategies for harmonising these data over time or nation, meta data and documentation standards for these data. Postdoctoral positions opening The Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality Graduate School of Arts and Letters, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan http://www.sal.tohoku.ac.jp/coe/index-en.html The Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality (CSSI) invites applications from excellent scholars for postdoctoral positions. The number of the positions will be one to three depending on our budget for the next fiscal year. The center pursues development of new theories and methodologies on social stratification and inequality with emphasis on studies of rational choice theory, minorities (including gender stratification and inequality), East Asia, and fairness. Faculty members of the center are sociologists, social psychologists, cultural anthropologists, a religious anthropologist, a historian, and an economist, and they study social stratification and inequality from various viewpoints. Applicants should hold doctoral degrees or show academic performance equivalent to holders of doctoral degrees. They should have a good command of English. Postdoctoral fellows of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science are not eligible for this application. The successful candidates will be expected to work under the supervision of the faculty members of the center for a one-year period from April 1st, 2007. (The date is negotiable.) The salary of a successful candidate will be 270,000 – 350,000 yen per month depending on his/her academic career. Travel and housing allowances will be paid to those who are eligible for them. Grants for excellent research projects proposed by the successful candidates will be provided. The center also academically and financially supports their presentations at international conferences. Prof. Manabe schrieb in den 1970er Jahren zusammen mit Richard T. Wetherald das erste globale Klimamodell. Darüber hinaus werden Dr. Hermann Held vom PIK Postdam und Dr. Johann Feichter vom MPI für Meteorologie Hamburg seitens der Klimaforschung detaillierte Einblicke in das Thema geben. Prof. Hans Peter Peters vom Forschungszentrum Jülich/Arbeitsgruppe „Mensch, Umwelt, Technik“ und Prof. Harald Heinrichs, Umweltkommunikation der Universität Lüneburg, werden aus Perspektive der Medienforschung die öffentliche Kommunikation von Klimaprognosen darstellen. The unifying question is: How to deal with uncertainty, concerning global warming, in climate research as well as in socio-political and public contexts? On the one hand climate modellers have to ensure the quality and validity of their results which have an enormous impact on society and politics and on the other science communication researchers have to analyse the media strategies in communicating uncertainty to the public related to the sensitive topic of climate change. Although having different perspectives and relationships to climate change, the core on which both groups of researchers relate to is the computer based simulation and its scenarios. Talking about uncertainty mainly denotes talking about the new and vague method of simulation. Therefore “dealing with uncertainty” can be reformulated as “dealing with simulation”. The workshop will give first hand insight into current strategies of climate modellers, how they deal with the uncertainty of the simulation’s results, how they improve them, and how they increase the validity of these results for policy options and public response to upcoming decisions. Furthermore the workshop will give information about the view of society, communicated by the Media, on the issue of climate change. Syukuro Manabe (Princeton University), the doyen of climate modelling who wrote the first global climate model together with Richard T. Wetherald in the 1970s, will talk about the early development of climate modelling and the prospect for the future. He will give a first hand insight in the developments, improvements and problems of climate modelling. Johann Feichter (MPI Hamburg), head of the group “Aerosols, Clouds and Climate", will present the advanced strategies for evaluating the current climate scenarios for the upcoming IPCC report 2007. Hermann Held (PIK Potsdam), senior researcher for uncertainty analysis of climate projections at the PIK Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, will point out the major developments for the derivation of robust (climate policy) advice from coupled complex models under massive uncertainty. Dealing with uncertainty is the key issue in integrated assessment processes for achieving reliable and sustainable results at the interface between science, politics and the public. Harald Heinrichs (Lueneburg University), assistant professor at the Institute for Environmental Communication at the University of Lueneburg, will explore the relationship between sustainability in environmental sciences and public communication. Hans Peter Peters [Research Center Juelich], communication researcher at the Program Group Humans-Environment-Technology of the Research Center Juelich, Germany, will describe some problems of public communication of science, focusing on computer simulation. Together with Harald Heinrichs he has recently completed a study on public meaning construction of climate change and it consequences. Jana Demnitz and Franziska Mrosek [FU Berlin], Master's candidates at the Free University Berlin, will present results of exploratory studies of how computer simulation is included in TV science coverage and how the simulation sequences are perceived by the audience. Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterstelle in der empirischen Bildungsforschung Im Rahmen des BiKS-Projektes (Bildungsprozesse, Kompetenzentwicklung und Formation von Selektionsentscheidungen im Vor- und Grundschulalter) an der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg ist die Stelle (BAT IIa) eines wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiters bzw. einer wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterin für zunächst 17 Monate ab dem 01.11.2006 zu besetzen. Die zu besetzende Stelle ist im sog. Rahmenprojekt angesiedelt, innerhalb dessen zwei größere Längsschnittstudien organisiert und durchgeführt werden. Der erste Längsschnitt untersucht Kinder ab dem dritten Lebensjahr und ihre familialen und institutionellen Kontexte; der zweite Längsschnitt wendet sich Grundschulkindern ab der dritten Klasse und ihren familialen und institutionellen Kontexten zu. Die Arbeit bezieht sich auf die zentrale Koordination der Datenerhebungen, die Feldsteuerung, das Datenmanagement und die Unterstützung der Datenauswertungen. Eine Aufteilung der Stelle auf zwei Halbtagsstellen ist möglich. März 2007 Lokaler Veranstalter: Walter Bien Thema: Kommunikation zwischen Wissenschaften und Politik. Beratung und Evaluation politischer Maßnahmen durch die Wissenschaft Im Vorfeld weit reichender politischer Entscheidungen wird heute regelmäßig auf das Expertenwissen von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern zurückgegriffen. Ebenso werden politische Maßnahmen häufig wissenschaftlich begleitet und in ihren Wirkungen evaluiert. Wie immer, wenn unterschiedliche Teilsysteme, die verschiedenen Logiken folgen, miteinander kommunizieren, ist diese Kommunikation nicht immer unproblematisch. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler müssen ihre Expertise so formulieren, dass sie von der Politik verstanden werden können und relevant sind. Politikerinnen und Politiker müssen ihre Fragen an die Wissenschaft so formulieren, dass diese wissenschaftlich bearbeitbar sind und sie müssen lernen die Informationen der Wissenschaft zu interpretieren. Die Beiträge sollen sich auf die spezifischen methodischen Probleme der Kommunikation zwischen Wissenschaft und Politik sowie auf die Evaluation politischer Maßnahmen beziehen. Ebenso sind Beiträge willkommen, die anhand konkreter Beratungs- oder Evaluationsprojekte die methodischen Probleme sowie mögliche Lösungsansätze aufzeigen.
