ParGram (f-structure) meeting Thurs 17 July

Dear Colleagues, Our next LFG f-structure workshop will be held online on Thursday, 17 July 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM UTC+0 (5 PM to 7 PM in the UK, 6 PM to 8 PM in Central Europe, 9 AM to 11 AM in California). The meeting will consist of two parts. In the first half, we will discuss any issues of linguistic analysis and/or technical XLE issues in relation to computational grammars under development by participants. If you are developing an XLE grammar and are having any issues with XLE or your grammar, you can discuss these issues in the first half of the meeting. In the second half, depending on how much time is remaining, we will continue the comparison of f-structures for translational equivalents of the following sentences: 36. It is raining. 37. There is a problem with the tractor. 38. The book cover depicted a tractor. The f-structures for the English versions of these sentences are available on the INESS page (see below) for this meeting series; please get in touch with one of us for access to this folder. Glue workshops at LFG25

Mark-Matthias Zymla and Mary Dalrymple are planning to conduct two workshops on the Glue theory of the syntax-semantics interface in connection with the upcoming LFG25 conference (https://eventum.upf.edu/128654/detail/lfg25-the-30th-international-lexical-…). The workshops will be held on Friday, 25 July, the day after the conference. You are welcome to attend either or both of the workshops. Workshop 1, Glue for Beginners, Mary Dalrymple, 10:00-12:30. This workshop is an introductory course for those who are interested in Glue and want to know more about how it works. It is aimed at beginners, and will assume no background in Glue. Workshop 2: Glue semantics and computation -- first steps, Mark-Matthias Zymla, 2:00-4:30. This workshop introduces different tools for exploring Glue semantics computationally, building on examples from Workshop 1. Thus, the tools will be used to model natural language semantics and to explore challenging aspects of working with Glue semantics computationally. The workshop is targeted primarily at participants of the first workshop, but may also be of interest to people who have a background in Glue semantics and are interested in its implementations. If you are interested in attending one or both of these workshops, it would be very helpful to the organizers if you could fill in a short survey (https://tinyurl.com/lfg-workshop), which will give us an idea of your background and what you want to get out of the workshop. This will help us to pitch the workshops at an appropriate level.

These meetings are held on-line, and anyone who is developing a grammar using the XLE grammar development platform (https://ling.sprachwiss.uni-konstanz.de/pages/xle/) is welcome to attend. We would also welcome participation by anyone using the Grammar Writer's Workbench ( https://parc-public.pages-external.parc.com/xle/isl/groups/nltt/medley/). The first half of these meetings will consist of discussion of general issues in grammar development and specific issues in the grammars and analyses that participants are working on. Please bring your questions and issues with your grammar and the XLE to this part of the meeting. In the second half of these meetings, we will discuss and compare f-structures for a parallel set of translationally equivalent sentences, using the Pargram treebank sentences as a starting point. The Pargram treebank is available at the following link (scroll to the end of the page): https://clarino.uib.no/iness/treebanks?collection=ParGram&reset-all=true We will discuss the f-structures for the current sentences (we may not have time for a discussion of all of them). You are welcome to attend the second half of the meeting even if your grammar does not parse the translational equivalent of these sentences. In preparation for the discussion in the second half of the meeting, participants will translate these sentences into the language they are working on, and produce and print out the f-structures to PDF. There is no need to print out c-structures. Dear colleagues, Our next LFG f-structure workshop will be held online on Tuesday 12 November from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm (UTC). The meeting will consist of two parts. In the first half, we will discuss any issues of linguistic analysis and/or technical XLE issues in relation to computational grammars under development by participants. If you are developing an XLE grammar and are having any issues with XLE or your grammar, you can discuss these issues in the first half of the meeting. In the second half, depending on how much time is remaining, we will continue the comparison of f-structures for translational equivalents of the following sentences: 23. The farmer made his son clean the tractor. 24. The farmer made his son leave. 25. The farmer made her son buy the tractor. The f-structures for the English versions of these sentences are available on the INESS page (see below) and in the Google Drive folder for this meeting series; please get in touch with one of us for access to this folder. In the Pargram consortium, the idea is that differences in f-structures for translational equivalents should reflect syntactic differences between the languages -- there should be no arbitrary differences to do with spelling of feature names or other linguistically irrelevant details.
